It’s a somewhat sparse week. It is, however, the
first week that the HD-DVD releases are really
starting to roll out. I didn’t list any this week,
but it wouldn’t be hard to start. (Serenity
is one of those first titles, too. That’s a pretty
strong show of faith, I’d say.) So, do you want the
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray titles listed too?
First, the genre releases:
- Day
the World
Ended / She Creature: A cheap double feature. - Event
Horizon
(Special Collector’s Editon): How did they sign
those people to
that script? - Gatchaman
Vol. 11: Gotta love the Alex Ross cover art. - Gatchaman
Vol. 12: More Ross goodness. - Saga
of Viking
Women / Teenage Caveman: Another Roger Corman
double feature. - Thundercats
–
Season Two, Volume 1: Ahh, the memories.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- The
American
President (Mother’s Day Gift Set): One in a line
of rereleases
that come with gift wrap and a card. - The
Bodyguard
(Mother’s Day Gift Set): I’ve never seen it. I
think from now on,
if I have nothing to say, I’ll just delete the colon
and not say
anything. - A
Cinderella
Story (Mother’s Day Gift Set) - The
Complete
Mr. Arkadin: Orson Welles and Criterion
Collection. - Cross
of
Iron: I haven’t heard of it, but it’s got one heck
of a creative
team. - Doogie
Howser,
M.D. – Season Four: How many years did this
last? - Hostel
(Unrated Edition): Tarantino may have produced,
but he didn’t
direct. - Kickboxer:
A
Collection: There were five of these movies?
Wow. - Message
In A
Bottle (Mother’s Day Gift Set) - Mrs.
Henderson
Presents: Dame Judi Dench received an Oscar
nomination for this one. - Must
Love Dogs
(Mother’s Day Gift Set) - Phantom
of the
Opera (Mother’s Day Gift Set): The Joel Schumacher
version. - Remington
Steele – Season Three: Man, this was funny. - The
Sentinel –
Complete First Season: Greg Beeman directed a few
of these. He’s
also done most Smallville season
finales. - Sweet
November
(Mother’s Day Gift Set) - TCM
Archives –
The Laurel and Hardy Collection: TCM picks them
well. - You’ve
Got
Mail (Mother’s Day Gift Set)
Finally, the pick of the week. Remington
Steele is always
good, and one of those shows I haven’t managed to
budget for just yet.
Sentinel
I think The sentinel is genre. Guy gains super-powers and hippie sidekick to become better person.
I’m fine with HD/Bluray. I’m curious to see what comes out in those formats. Maybe have them seperate from the other stuff though… for now.
Cross of Iron
I watched Cross of Iron some time ago and enjoyed it, although it didn’t make my favorites list. On the one hand you have a glory-seeking officer who wants to earn an Iron Cross no matter what the price. On the other hand you have James Coburn as a grizzled, veteran Sergeant who has already earned an Iron Cross and is disillusioned with the war. The film follows their adventures and the transformation of the officer.
Event Horizon
There is a sequence towards the end of this movie where a bunch of images are quickly flashed on the screen. I watched it in slow motion and got quite a shock–the images were quite gruesome.
Re: Event Horizon
Oh heck yeah, I personally blame this movie’s sequences for much of the recent gorefests that have come out in the past ten years – The House On Haunted Hill, Ghost 13, etc. THoHH felt like it was that type of footage & sentiment stretched into a full movie, quite nasty.

Re: Event Horizon
BTW, the DVD apparently isn’t a new edit but rather includes separate additional footage that was used as part of the test screenings.

HD Movies
My vote is "No." I won’t be purchasing a HD or Blu-Ray player anytime soon.

Re: HD Movies
Maybe come November, but it still remains to be seen if the PS3 is going to get the worldwide launch (or if they’ll still be using Blu-ray discs). Even then, I doubt I’ll have the $1000 I’ll need to be able to buy it anyways.
My vote would be to denote if a release also includes HD or BR formats, but ignore the re-releases of stuff that’s already available on DVD (unless it’s seriously cool, like that Planet of the Apes headset).
Re: HD Movies
Agreed. I personally won’t go the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray route simply because it’s Beta and VHS all over again. Other reasons:
1 – My DVD player does HD-upconversion which looks perfectly good to me.
2 – I imagine downloadable HD movies will be coming soon, or something else.
3 – I don’t want to re-purchase the DVDs I currently own.
4 – SACD or DVD-Audio anyone?
Re: HD Movies
I have both, and my player can play both. What was the question?
