Weekly DVD Picks – July 11, 2006

The volume of releases is starting to come up, if not the quality.

First, the genre releases:

Now, the non-genre releases:

Finally, the pick of the week. To be honest, nothing jumps out at me this week. My advice is to wait until next week, when we’ve got far more high quality items to choose from.

      Fantasy + Animation = Genre x 2

According to Amazon (at least, if I’m reading it correctly) this appears to be only the ‘new’ Pooh movies (Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, The Tigger Movie, and Piglet’s Big Movie), not the shorts from the 60’s and 70’s that most of us grew up watching.

Wait… any animation movie is automatically genre?

Also, I’d differentiate between fantasy and fairy tale…

See, I never saw any pooh movie or short or anything. My mom used to read us the stories, though.

Can you name one that isn’t? The only thing that comes to mind for me is Grave of the Fireflies, and even that has ghosts.

          How?

Pooh is on the list because it’s fantasy, even if it is the particular flavour of fantasy we call a fairy tale. Animation is not automatically on the list in most cases. (I list unfamiliar anime with the genre stuff because that’s a safe bet, but I could be wrong.) Titles like The Sweater, Breath of a Nation and Begone Dull Care, though all great examples of the variety of animation, are not genre, and would not be listed among genre releases.
