This week’s picks are in.
First, the genre releases:
- Andromeda – Season 5 Collection
- Basilisk, Vol. 2 – The Spoils of War: This link is to the limited edition.
- Century of Science Fiction: Hosted by Christopher Lee
- Christmas Classics Collection: A five disc set of public domain Yuletime entertainment. Includes everything from D.W. Griffith’s A Trap For Santa to Nicholas Webster’s Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
- Cyborg 2: An early Angelina Jolie movie. How early? Elias Koteas gets top billing, following his role as Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
- Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda: Slipstream Collection: The complete 110 episode series in one box.
- Greatest American Hero – The Complete Series: Includes the cape and a notebook. Nice packaging, but I’ve already got the entire series.
- The Little Mermaid: Disney’s first DVD release is getting the two disc treatment, now that there are so very many more DVD players on the market. (When this first came out, there were about 50,000 players sold worldwide. They’ve sold a few more than that now.)
- Medium – The Complete Second Season
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail: This is the Extraordinarily Deluxe Two Disc Edition.
- Planet of the Apes: TV Series
- South Park: The Hits, Vol. 1
- Stargate SG-1 – Season 9
- The Twilight Zone – The Complete Collection: Every episode from every season of the original.
- X-Men: The Last Stand: This link is to the Stan Lee Collector’s Edition.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- 21 Grams: A new collector’s edition.
- Abbot and Costello Show – 100th Anniversary Collection Season Two
- Against the Wall: Kyle MacLachlan and Samuel L. Jackson star in this John Frankenheimer movie.
- Bugsy: A special edition.
- Confidence
- High Sierra: A Bogart flick.
- Humphrey Bogart Signature Collection Vol. 1: Includes “Casablanca,” “The Treasure of Sierra Madre,” “High Sierra” and “The Drive By Night.”
- Humphrey Bogart Signature Collection Vol. 2: Includes “The Maltese Falcon,” “Passage to Marseille,” “Across the Pacific,” “All Through The Night,” “Action in the North Atlantic” and “Satan Met A Lady.”
- Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Locked ‘N Loaded Director’s Cut)
- The Maltese Falcon: A new three disc edition.
- Penn and Teller: Bullsh*t – Complete Third Season
- Point Break: Pure Adrenaline Edition
- Scarface: The Platinum Edition.
- Thank You For Smoking
Finally, the pick of the week. In spite of some great genre material, I’ve got to go with the new edition of The Maltese Falcon. It’s a classic for good reason: check it out.
Thank You for Smoking
I highly recommend this – I saw it at the beginning of the summer, and I went in expecting something quite different from what I actually saw. This is probably the most brilliant satire / character study I’ve ever seen, with a fantastic supporting cast (Rob Lowe is perfect – "When do you sleep?" "…Sunday") and a main character that you should probably hate, but can’t – I think this might be Aaron Eckhart’s finest performance.
Meh
I’m not really too interested in anything this week, yet again. Which is good, saves money (:
Where do you get the raw info from, by the way?
Re: Meh
Amazon.com lists the "New and Future Releases" in the DVD section.
Differences between Theatrical & Director’s Cut of "L,S&2SS"
So, does anybody know what the differences are between the Directors Cut DVD and the original release DVD of "Lock, Stock, and 2 Smocking Barrels"?
