This week’s list is not only early, it’s a little different than the past few weeks. AceCaseOR’s picks are now integrated with Fiziko’s, so they’re only distinguished by the media they are being released on.
First, the DVD picks:
- Across the Universe – Amazon.com exclusive special edition: Includes a two disc DVD set and a blue T-shirt, size large.
- Barney Miller: The Complete Third Season
- Bleach Vol. 15 – The Rescue: The Conclusion of Season 3 (these episodes are already up, uncut and subtitled, on Hulu.com)
- Degrassi: The Next Generation – Season Seven
- The Duel of the Century: Shaw Brothers film from Well Go USA’s Sword Masters label – it looks from the Amazon information that it’s dubbed, but in the original aspect ratio.
- Eclipse Series 15: Travels with Hiroshi Shimisu
- Elegy
- The F Word: Season Two
- Faust: This new 2 disc edition is also available in the Murnau box set.
- Ghost Hunters: Season 4, Part 2
- Gurran Lagann Pt. 3 rerelease available with and without a soundtrack CD.
- The Haunted Castle
- Head Case: Season 1
- JAG – Season Eight
- Married… with Children: Season Ten
- Mr. Belvedere Seasons 1 and 2
- Murnau: Kino excells at this type of release. This one includes “Nosferatu,” “Faust,” “The Last Laugh,” “Tartuffe,” “The Haunted Castle” and “The Finances of the Grand Duke,” all of which were directed by the legendary F.W. Murnau.
- The Nanny – The Complete Third Season
- Princess Resurrection: Collection 1: Shonen Horror anime
- Punisher: War Zone (Single Disc Edition)
- Punisher: War Zone (Two Disc Special Edition)
- A Pup Named Scooby-Doo: I can imagine the executive meeting right now. “Hmmm… we want a puppy to appeal to the kids, because obviously only kids watch cartoons. They didn’t like Scrappy Doo, though. I know! Let’s make Scooby the puppy! And kids watch whatever’s on, so we can make really, really short seasons and rake in the dough on reruns! Yeah!”
- The Robe
- Sergeant Preston of the Yukon – Complete Season One: I’ve never heard of the Falcon Picture Group before.
- Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 2
- Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 3: This was a surprisingly good show, serving the “family entertainment” area nicely with scripts that are appropriate for the kids but not insulting to their parents. I’d suggest holding out for the complete season box set, which has been announced without a release date.
- The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 5
- Twilight (Two Disc Special Edition): Sure to be a top seller. Having seen the movie, I don’t understand why.
- Velveteen Rabbit
- Yumeria: Complete Collection: Harem romantic-comedy action anime.
- The Zeta Project: A spinoff from “Batman Beyond.”
Now, the Blu-Ray picks:
- Bolt
- The Company of Wolves
- Lady Death: Yeah, it’s animated by Studio Madhouse, but it’s produced out of the US, based off the American comic book series of the same name.
- The Matador
- The Princess Bride
- Punisher: War Zone
- Quo Vadis
- The Robe
- Rollerball
- Rules of Attraction
Finally, the pick of the week. This week, AceCaseOR and Fiziko agree that the Blu-Ray edition of “The Princess Bride” is the item most deserving of your hard earned cash.
The Robe
Can’t speak for the movie since I haven’t seen it, but the book is very, very good.
The Great Cthulhoo approves of this thread.
Re: The Robe
The film is hokey, as one might expect from a Bible/sandal epic from that era, but it’s a well-made, lesser known example of the genre.
Re: The Robe
Oh, and for those who care, I reviewed Across the Universe when it first came out.
About Rollerball on Blu-Ray
That’s the re-make of Rollerball, starring Paul Heyman and some other not as important people I forgot about. ;)
Re: About Rollerball on Blu-Ray
Horrible movie. I didn’t even finish watching it. Thought it would have -something- in common with the original, but it didn’t.
