Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Dr Who DVDs

Cymor
writes, The Dr. Who DVDs:
Caves of Androzani
Remembrance of the Daleks
were released April 2nd.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy will be
released April 30th. It will have all six
episodes and a lot of extra features.
Are there any other interesting DVD
releases on the horizon people want to talk about?

  1. HHGttG — watch it or skip it?
I’ve always been curious about the Hitchhiker tv adaptation and now that it’s coming out on DVD, I have no excuse not to see it. Or do I? Is it one of those things that’s best skipped *especially* if you are a fan? At least one person has told me that it really, really stinks. However, this person had not even read the books so I do not consider it a reliable opinion.

I’ve got it on VHS and didn’t care for
it. (I’ve read all five books in the trilogy.) I’ll
try to find time to watch and review it this
      weekend.

Nothing beats the original medium — radio. Being glued to my clock radio listening to HHGttG and Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe (http://www.zbs.org) made me forget my roach infested apartment. Ah, those halcyon student days…

I’m a huge fan of OTR–sounds like I would like the Hitchhiker radio shows. I’m aware that they’re out there, but haven’t managed to run across them.

  2. Yes yes yes good stuff on DVD on the horizon!

    Here we go:

    1. (As Mentioned) Doctor Who pair 1: The Caves of Androzani (Davison) and Rememberance of the Daleks (McCoy). Same as U.K. versions. Excellent extras such as 77s footage of the Colin Baker regeneration and deleted scenes from Rememberance.

    2. Doctor Who pair 2: more from BBC U.K. including ‘The Ark in Space’ (T. Baker) and I think ‘Tomb of the Cybermen’ (Troughton), both excellent releases. I have watched the R2 version of both and the extras on Tomb are to die for, and Ark has some excellent new footage too, as well as to expect another U.S.-only T.J. Lubinski “Di Silva” featurette on ‘The Ark in Space’.

    3. Doctor Who release 3: ‘The Key to Time’ boxed set (T. Baker)! Yes, in probably November of 2002 we should expect to see the entire 26 episodes (6 stories) with commentaries from BBC America and Warner Bros. compiled by the legendary Doctor Who Restoration team who has also given us the previous BBC U.K. releases. Season 16 (the Key to Time) won a poll in 2000 (IIRC) the BBC held after the release of ‘The Five Doctors’ in the U.S. (the first U.S. Doctor Who DVD — anyone remember the “Doctor Who DVD Now” page?). And then, last year, the Restoration Team mentioned that BBC America requested new prints of “The Power of Kroll” (serial 5 of 6 in season 16). So I had a feeling back then that this was coming and now it is certain, though because the release is only an estimate of the time required to compile, nothing is certian about the exact date of release.

      Meanwhile in the U.K.:

    4. The Ark in Space was released this month — the same week it was broadcast in Maryland on MPT which meant for one I did not have to tape it at midnight. See comments above.

    5. Carnival of Monsters (Pertwee) with Katy Manning commentary and new special effects — another Robert Holmes classic.

    6. The Aztecs (Hartnell)

    7. Ressurection of the Daleks (Davison) — not to be confused with the previous release. In the 1980’s they had a clear lack of imagination when it came to naming serials about the Daleks.

Now, in addition to being a GREAT year for Doctor Who DVDs, we also have:

    8. R2 PAL – ‘The Tomorrow People’: ‘The Slaves of Jedikaih’ last February, and ‘The Medeusa Strain’ in May! Expect more later this year from Revelation Films, beginning with ‘The Blue and the Green’ IIRC. AFAICT, only the pilot will have commentaries for this TP release.

    9. R2 PAL – Farscape Mega Boxed Sets for Season 3. These boxed sets are rather pricy and you can get the straight 2-DVD Boxes for the standard price, but if you are willing to pay a few pounds more, you get 2 in a set of 10 lithographs each box and a special “personal” item as well. Box one was “John Criton’s Tachymeter” — which I guess measures Tackyness. :) Other boxes will have effects from other characters. Box 2 is due in May, with boxes to follow in (IIRC) July, September and November for the final four we are now watching on Sci Fi in the U.S. They are also considering putting on some commentaries to the later releases this year.

    10. R2 PAL – Twin Peaks: Fire walk with Me in July (may be region free). This is NOT the hack job Columbia put out over here. The French distributor has the rights to the 2-3 hours of extra footage David Lynch shot for this film and it is STILL possible that the French release may be a re-edit with some of the lost footage restored! Twin Peaks fans rejoice if this happens and don’t buy your copy until we know for sure what the French have done. Still no word about the Twin Peaks Pilot or the 22 episodes from Season 2.

      Meanwhile, in the U.S. again:

    11. Expect to see the first of 5 (?) 2-DVD boxed set releases of Season 2 in the U.S. starting this year. The U.S. packaging for Season 2 will be similar to the U.K. release though we might get more extras as we did for S1, including commentaries.

    12. Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Season 1 (7 episodes) was released earlier this year, and Season 2 (22 episodes) should be out in May or June depending on how schedules pan out.

    13. ST:TNG — you know this one, S1 is out, S2 on its way next month, and S3-S7 to follow.

    14. Harry Potter next month. Have you pre-ordered? I am still wondering how they going to make that 50-foot Basilisk in HP2, the Movie…

    15. NOVEMBER release of Lord of the Rings, and could it be, my friend tells me this: We know August will be the original Theatricl film with extras, let’s say extras set X, on 2 discs. And November is the ‘Director’s Cut’ with extras set Y on so I’ve been told 4 Discs! Then, my friend suggested a special SIX DISC release of JUST Return of the King which would be Theatrical, Directors, extras set X and extras set Y. I won’t even mention Pan & Scan! AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

    16. Of course, HGttG!!

Well, those are my 16 top MUST HAVE items either out recently or later this year in no particular order (except that I LOVE Doctor Who!). Anyone else?

    Devo Andare,

    Jeffrey.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Season 1 (7 episodes)
was released earlier this year, and Season 2 (22
episodes) should be out in May or June depending on
      how schedules pan out.

The first Buffy set, released in
February IIRC, was a 12 episode set that I’ll review
when I get time to watch them all in order. The
season 2 set is due out on June 11, the same day as
      Monster’s Ball and Real Genius,
which I always felt was a very underrated comedy.

Also on the horizon is the fifth season of The
      X-Files
, due out on May 14. That’s the same day
as Stan Lee’s Marvels, Monsters, and Mutants
      we mentioned the other day.

Sorry, forgot to say, #11 refers to Farscape R1 NTSC.

Oh! Oh! And I just realized, More Tara King on the move. Yes, The Avengers ’68 Sets 3 and 4 are due out on 30 April, hopefully with Tara’s ’69 season to follow later this year. I personally hope they put the Joanna Lumley years out too, as I happen to think her Doctor* was one of the best!

*See Doctor Who and the Curse of the Fatal Death
