Weekly Digital Disc Picks – November 23, 2010

This is a surprisingly lackluster week given the proximity to a huge U.S. shopping day. Of course, most DVD release dates are chosen so far in advance that studios may have chosen to avoid competing with two titles that didn’t even make it to the “Picks of the Week.”

Title DVD Release(s) Blu-Ray Release(s)
The Expendables One disc DVD release Three disc Blu-Ray/DVD combo
Blaine: This title may have kept most adult male-oriented releases away from this week’s list, as release dates are often determined before box office numbers come in. I haven’t seen it yet, but want to see it at least once just for the sake of seeing that cast together in the same movie.
Desert Punk – Veridian Collection Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Alex: This is sort of like Mad Max & Fist of the North Star meets Deadpool.
Ghost Sweeper Mikami Volume 1 Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Girls Bravo – Complete Box Set Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Kaledo Star – Season 1 Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Kurokami Vol. 4 Amazon.com, rightstuf.com Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
Sekirei Season 1 Amazon.com, rightstuf.com
A Nanny For Christmas Amazon.com
Blaine: I’d love to unwrap Emmanuelle Vaugier on Christmas morning, but I doubt that’s what this actually contains.
The Search for Santa Paws Amazon.com Amazon.com
Classics (Cult)
I’m Still Here Amazon.com Amazon.com
Blaine: Joaquin Phoenix now says he was just “in character” when he gave that infamous interview. The problem with trying to promote a movie with an interview like that before production has even started is that the connection between the two takes too long to establish, and people just assume you’re really that weird.
Roger Corman: Best of the Bs Deluxe Collectors Set Amazon.com
Blaine: It’s an 11 disc set, but I have no idea what’s on them. I’m assuming the original Little Shop of Horrors, Wasp Woman, The Terror, and a couple of other mainstays will be here, but that’s guesswork.
Space Precinct: The Complete Series Amazon.com
Classics (Traditional)
America Lost and Found: The BBS Story Amazon.com
Blaine: Includes Head, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Drive, He Said, A Safe Place, The Last Picture Show and The King of Marvin Gardens. That’s seven movies on six Blu-Ray discs with Criterion Collection transfers. I’m in.
The Complete Metropolis Amazon.com
Blaine: As described last week, only on Blu-Ray.
7th Heaven: The Final Season Amazon.com
Deadwood: The Complete Series Amazon.com
Pillars of the Earth Amazon.com Amazon.com
The Tudors: The Complete Series Amazon.com
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Amazon.com
Blaine: This title may have kept most child-oriented releases away from this week. Why it didn’t come out day-and-date with the Blu-Ray last month baffles me, though.
Music / Musical
Michael Jackson’s Vision Amazon.com
Murder, She Wrote: Season Twelve Amazon.com
Blaine: This was the final season.
Eat Pray Love Amazon.com Amazon.com
Blaine: This title may have kept most adult female-oriented releases away from this week’s list.
WWE Bragging Rights 2010 Amazon.com
Batman Beyond: The Complete Series Amazon.com
Wagon Train: Complete Season Two Amazon.com

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “A rather impressively disappointing week, considering that these are the new releases for Black Friday. I’m making Desert Punk my pick, as if you like Deadpool, this series probably will appeal to you. The Expendables & the Complete Metropolis will also be going in my Netflix Queue.” Blaine says, “you still can’t go wrong with Metropolis. The BBS box set includes a lot of titles from my must-see list, though I have yet to actually watch any of them. For the DVD-owners, take a good look at Batman Beyond.”

One reply

  1. It’s kind of unfortunate that “Eat, Pray, Love” kept all the adult female releases away, as by all accounts the film was dramatically inferior to the book, in the sense that it basically missed the point of the book.

By means of explanation – second hand from someone I know who read the book and saw the movie. The book was about a woman who had gotten out of an emotionally abusive relationship going on a journey of self exploration. The film was practically Sex & The City 2.
