The Iron Man Cometh

To film that is. Marvel has optioned the comic book character to New Line Cinema. The movie is expected to be released sometime in 2005.

Perfect timing, I just finished “Essential Iron Man, Vol. I.” This is one of my favorites, so I’m pretty excited.

  1. Good News, Good News!
Iron Man has always been one of my favorite comic book characters. Tony Stark is an arms manufacturer which arguably starts him off as a bad guy, he’s far more the playboy than Bruce Wayne ever was, and the storylines about his struggles with alcoholism were some of the best in terms of mainstream comics tackling social issues (anyone remember him as a truly down-and-out bum after losing losing his company?). Throw in the ever-changing suit of armor and its primary origin as a way to keep his heart beating after being wounded in Vietnam (not as a solider, for the neophytes out there), and he’s one of the most interesting characters ever to come out of the Marvel Bullpen.

I can only hope that they do the depth of his character justice AND that we get Mandarin as the villain in the movie.

Oh, I guess I have one more hope (two combined into one): A *good* Captain America movie followed by an Avengers movie (Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Wasp and Ant-Man – the originals, of course). Let the Marvel comic book movie renaissance continue, PLEASE! :)

  2. Gough and Miller

The best news in there, as far as I’m concerned, is that Alfred Gough and Miles Miller are writing the script, at least in its first draft. I hope they manage a shorter learning curve than they had in Smallville or Birds of Prey, though. Both shows needed more than two hours of screen time to build up steam. However, they’ve got a lot of experiences to learn from, and it’s nice to see that someone in this new deluge of Marvel property movies has experience in the genre. (Sam Raimi is the only one to touch other heroes so far, with Darkman.)
