Blaine: This was based on a hilarious book, but the comedy didn’t seem to translate to the screen very effectively. Speaking as someone who worked at a theatre when it came out, I think it’s safe to say that Demi Moore’s topless scenes are the main draw.

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “the combination of Charade and Double Indemnity at that price makes Screen Couples Spotlight Collection my pick of the week.” Alex says, “While I admit I haven’t seen Game of Thrones yet, it’s definitely going into my Netflix queue, as, well, since I don’t have HBO I haven’t had a chance to watch it until this release.”

  1. The Grail, she be temping, but alas, I already own two DVD versions (regular, and the special anniversary edition)… One must wonder if it’s really worth the upgrade.

  2. Ah, the romance of the Grail. The Meaning of Life is also up this week, I see. Yeah, I wonder about any upgrade to Grail, since it used cheapness as an asset.

    Some recommendations, sort of:

The original Little Shop of Horrors is worth seeing once; I don’t know if I’d recommend buying it. The Kevin Smith collection has two of his better films, Clerks and Chasing Amy, the Universal Monster collection’s not a bad lot, if you don’t already have their earlier versions, The Deer Hunter is another must-see, and I recommend Fast Times at Ridgemont High to those who might be skeptical of an 80s teen film (and the other two in that package have some interesting depictions of high school nerds)

We also have some interesting curiosities: The Egg and I introduced Ma and Pa Kettle, and Car Wash while hardly a masterpiece, is an interesting bit of 1970sana.

  3. I wonder if the Jackie Chan collection is the ones with the original, horrible and awesome dubbing, or the new ones where Jackie Chan went back and re-recorded the audio with his own voice. Because those are nowhere NEAR as hilarious.

      • Nothing like Jackie Chan walking around and calling people “Old chap” in a perfect English accent.
