Doctor Who: The Moonbase
Amazon

Ender’s Game
Amazon
  • Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital: US, CAN
  • DVD/Digital: US, CAN
Comments Blaine: I haven’t seen it, and won’t for a long time. When I first read the book, I enjoyed it and thought it would make a great movie. Then I read some of Card’s writing which, in Card’s opinion, constitute well-reasoned, non-fiction editorials. In my opinion, they are hate speech. Thus, I won’t knowingly pay for anything that supports Card. Granted, his pay for this movie was a one-time advance payment, so paying for this won’t put a dime in his pocket in the near future, but I believe that supporting movies based on his works would encourage Hollywood to pay him again to make more movies based on his works. I won’t see this while Card lives.

Comments Alex: Reverse harem romantic comedy anime about a girl who has moved to a rural town and ended up becoming a local Goddess (in the animist Shinto sense) due to getting kissed by another God. The Goddess edition comes with an artbox, several postcards, a hairstick, a tote bag, a replica of a character’s ornament from the show, and a folding fan.

My Mother The Car: The Complete Series / Life Stinks / Mr. Saturday Night

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon
Amazon
  • Blu-Ray: US, CAN
  • DVD: US, CAN
  • Digital: US, CAN
Comments Alex: Take the recent Sherlock Holmes films (the Robert Downey Jr. ones), make them about Sherlock Holmes’s Chinese counterpart, Detective Dee, and made them Wuxia films. You’d get the recent Detective Dee films. This film covers Dee’s first case, when he was a rookie in the Imperial Constabulary.
The Young Riders: Season Three, Volume Two
Amazon
  • DVD: US, CAN

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Aside from Sherlock and Young Detective Dee, not much has caught my interest.” Blaine says, “this series of Sherlock is the best to date, in my opinion. Great stuff.”

  1. I want to see Gravity, eventually, but I’m in no rush.

I’ve already pre-ordered Ender’s Game. I get why some people boycott him, but I tend to separate the author from their works. If I didn’t read the works of every author I thought was a d*ck, my shelves would be rather bare. Plus, there were thousands of other people who were not Card that were employed by the production that are much better to focus upon. And, while far from perfect, I still enjoyed the movie.

Sherlock S3 was pretty good (just got around to watching the final episode last night!), but I really hope that last bit was a misdirection and not actually that person back somehow. I don’t own the first two seasons, and they end up on Netflix and/or Amazon Instant, so I’m not going to buy them any time soon.

    • Okay, they’re selling what many people regard as the worst series in the history of American television– and they’ve packaged it with two movies that have no appreciable connection to it? Is there a WTF Market they’re trying to hit?

  2. I thought Ender’s Game was a phenomenal book. I have a really hard time believing a movie version could be good, let alone ruin the thing. Anyone feel like correcting me on this?

    • The book was indeed much better. There was no way to make a faithful movie from that book without spreading it out into multiple movies and switching out many of the child actors several times, which would have been difficult.

That said, taken on its own, I still liked it. (Biggest objection being the ending…) – I did a brain dump of my thoughts on the discussion here a few months ago: https://bureau42.com/view/15619/enders-game-discussion.

  3. I refuse to support anything by Card now that I know better (fortunately only read the first book), but it was a good book and I’ll probably buy a used copy of the movie. Someday.
