Weekly Comics Discussion

The complete shipping lists are here
as always. This week’s shipment includes 1602
and Ultimate X-Men #41, neither of
which finishes a story arc. I’ve got four trades
coming in from the backlist though (Deadline
and Daredevil Vol. 6: Lowlife from Marvel,
and Sojourn volumes 3 and 4 from Crossgen),
so I may have reviews coming soon anyway.

  1. not that impressed w/sojourn

I *really* wanted to like it, but I wasn’t impressed. The writing is pretty good – but not incredible – and I only read vol.1, but I just got the standard “we’re attractive fantasy people (especially the blonde chick) fighting the generic troll army (because of course the evil overlord couldn’t find humans depraved enough to fight for money), looking for the pieces of the great maguffin which has powers they know not what of”. The ONLY intriguing part is a part that worries me a bit -which I’ll get into in a sec – at the end when they actually SHOW the guy who they’re supposed to be summoning at the end of the story, and you see that the “gods” are going to have to talk the bastard into answering the summons when it comes! kinda cool. That said, someone who’s read less fantasy than I have might really be into it. My wife’s going to give it a shot, and I think she’ll like it.

NOW, I also got “The First” at the same time as Sojourn – I really enjoyed that one. a LOT more involved story, very intricate plotlines – a tad confusing on a first read…but anyway – (I will be reviewing this one very shortly, btw) – here’s my concern. The crossgen “symbol” – that stylized yin-yang – shows up in every crossgen title. Every one. And from what I’ve read of these two comics, it’s used as a “sigil of power” or some such in every title – one bestowed by mysterious forces older and more powerful than the gods of The First – and it appears that in order to really understand what the hell is going on, you have to read ALL of EVERY Crossgen title. Something I remember from the crossgen website way back when vaguely seems to confirm this… don’t really know…but I’m concerned. because I’m the kind of sick freak who would do exactly that. though they’d have ensured that I would NEVER buy their titles in single-issue form. ANYWAY. that’s my rant.

  2. that said….
I’m really looking forward to the vol 2. of The First I’ve got on order, as well as another title from crossgen…Ruse…
(btw – just checked crossgen’s site – they’re ending a lot of the series’ in question – so maybe I’m right, and they’re doing the right thing – rather than dragging it out)

A lot of their series were apparently written to have a
single ending point. In this case, many of the shared
titles will cross over in the “War” miniseries that will
end most, and relaunch some old characters in new settings
when it’s over. (Sojourn is not involved; it looks like
it’ll end when the story is over, which should be TPB
      volume 7 or 8.)
