Too much of a good thing?
Man the movie was great. I hope it can live up to it.

    At least 6 episodes
At least 6 episodes. Since they apparently have so much faith in it why don’t they just go ahead and cancel it now. When will the networks learn that they need to give shows at least a full season to get on their feet? Oh well, I would just as soon see them continue it as a “movie of the month” each year anyway.

The short season format works well for HBO. Granted, most of their shows have 12-13 episode seasons, but Oz did well with 8. Six is a bit too short for my tastes, but I actually like seeing shorter, tighter seasons instead of 4-5 good episodes and 15+ of filler. Gives them to opportunity to develop one strong story across several eps. Think of it like a series of mini-series, if that helps.

I agree. Better a good mini-series than a crappy regular run.

I would hate for this to turn into the original.

Well, you know, the suits are only in it for the money – and apparently profit is never enough – it has to be wild greedy profit prefreably. The reason it has taken thim this long to go ahead is that BG is will be very expensive to make and they are very worried about the cost.
The main stars were signed for 13 episodes, but it needs to be a roaring success for it to continue beyond the six.

      No pressure.

It’s odd when you hear about a series being ‘wildly’ expensive these days. I mean, in the 60’s-80’s sure, I could understand a Sci-Fi series costing a bit due to the need for costumes, special set designs and props (although Star Trek made due with salt & pepper shakers) and the all important effects, which were usually custom models being hand manipulated.

Today though, computers can generate a lot of the sets and all of the special effects. It’s not like it takes a Cray anymore either, B5 was done with a bunch of Amigas. So why the heck does a Sci-Fi series seem to cost more to do now than ever? Even moving production to another country, like Farscape being filmed in Australia, doesn’t seem to be cost effective anymore.

        Personally, I don’t get it.

The cost isn’t hardware, it’s people. You don’t think a team of skilled graphics artists don’t cost alot? As well when you consider actors whom need lots of makeup (aliens) that can take hours of sitting around paying both actors and makeup artists. As well remember any time you have some special effects for cheap there’s some other show with effects just as good and you can just show money at it to make them better, they do the same and continue until you both have big budgets.
