Cinescape has the
story. Unspecified cuts of Star Wars
episodes IV, V, and VI will be released in a box set
very similar to the Indiana Jones set on
September 21, 2004.
DVD Has been out for a while
I was at a gaming convention last year, and someone was selling IV-VI on DVD that he picked up from Australia. They were the real thing, just strange that it came out over there first.
Re: DVD Has been out for a while
Well, they weren’t official then because Lucas simply hasn’t released them on DVD. Most likely, it was a bootleg conversion from the laserdiscs that were released. That’s the only publically available copy that of sufficient quality.
just before Ep. 3 comes out…
Just like LOTR, I’m waiting for the full box set of Star Wars before I plunk down money. So in a few years, they’ll release I-VI as a box set, and then I’ll get it.
The only real sad thing about Star Wars is that Lucas says he won’t do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX

That might be a good thing. Perhaps someone who won’t screw up Episodes VII, VIII, and IX will do them instead of Lucas.
It’s been a few years, but I remember seeing an interview with Lucas (EpI was in pre-production) where he said that he wouldn’t be doing 7-9. He basically said that by the time he finished 1-3 and thought about 7-9 he’d probably be retired.
The interviewer asked if he had somebody in mind that could possibly do them instead and he basically said “never, they’re all mine.”
I really wish, though I know it’s probably futile, that they release this with an option to view the trilogy as originally presented. That would be incentive enough to get it.
Lucas says they’ll be the special editions WITHOUT the theatrical release. I’m
just glad I’ve got VHS tapes of the original.

I makes ME glad that I got the laserdiscs of the
theatrical
release. At the time I was bummed and bought the special edition LDs later,
but now I’m quite happy about it. I’m sure they’ll retain their value for a
while.
And who knows what tweaks Lucas will throw into the mix? I expect to see
Jar Jar Binks in the background of some scenes.

See, that just pisses me off. It’s just like all these DVDs that have dual releases of Widescreen and Fullscreen – everyone knows that it could go on one disc, and all they are doing is making a money grab.
Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll try to gouge our bank accounts by releasing a super-special limited ultimate edition with both cuts on the discs (or even a disc for each cut in the box) I personally would be willing to spend for that. I just wish that my VHS original editions were Widescreen (what can I say, I was a stupid kid who thought that they cut part of the image out to make the widescreen from the fullscreen, and not vice versa)

Re: my hope
You and me both. I guard those precious tapes like gold. I’m even afraid to watch them too often for fear of wearing out the tapes.
Re: my hope
Not even Star Wars can get me to go back to VHS
again. If I could stand it, my list of potential reviews
would be about 100 titles longer.
Re: my hope
And even with the DVD…my fingers are just not fast enough to make Han
shoot first.
Rumor has it the storm troopers are armed with walkie talkies too ;)
