Potential movie reviews

I’ve recently managed to create a catalogue
of my DVD collection, and it includes some titles
that may or may not be Bureau 42 material. Rather
than guessing, I’ll just ask you: do you (eventually;
I’m not promising any timelines) want to see reviews
for The Complete Goofy (every short starring
Goofy), George Lucas In Love,
Hackers, The Messenger, some NASA
documentary footage, Pi, Real
Genius
, Stan Lee’s Mutants, Monsters and
Marvels
, Tomorrow Never Dies,
WarGames, or The Complete Wallace and
Gromit
? (We’d need to create a non-fiction film
category if you want the NASA or Stan Lee stuff
reviewed.)

    please!
    These would be nice:

    Wallace & Gromit
    The Fifth Element
    Gattaca
    Pleasantville
    Signs
    Stargate
    Total Recall
    Unbreakable

  2. hossman says:

    Pi
You should review Pi. If for no other reason than that many people have never even heard of it, and more people should

  3. fiziko says:

    Requests noted

The above requests from is and hossman have been noted. I
should also mention that the upcoming
    review list
includes the number of requesters for a
reason; the more people request a given review, the sooner
I’ll get to it. (That’s why the list is sorted first by
number of requests, and then alphabetically.) I just made
up a little spreadsheet to keep track of who made which
requests, too, so don’t worry about repeats. You can
    request here or by
    e-mail
    .

    Stan Lee
The Stan Lee one would be nice, even if it wasn’t related (which I personally believe it is), but of course it’s ultimately your decision…

  5. Tom Wake says:

    By the way…
Would you object if someone were to make a HUGE list of requests from that list? It’s just that there’s a lot on that list that I can’t decide whether to see or not…

One of the reasons I count them is to encourage this.
It’ll help guage the level of interest.

    All of em!
You should definitely review all of the titles you listed. Some I’ve seen and always like to hear other people opinions, while others I haven’t seen and would like to hear your opinion on whether or not to see it.

    Mine (priority == bold)

    • The Complete Goofy
    • George Lucas In
      Love
    • Hackers
    • Pi
    • Real Genius

And I want to know home come there’s a complete Goofy and I wasn’t
    informed!

I suppose I should have mentioned all those Disney
Treasury Edition, but I missed many myself. I had to go
to eBay to get my Complete Goofy, as they were produced in
limited numbers. (About 150k for each Treasury.) There’s
already a couple of Mickey sets, a Silly Symphonies,
Disneyland USA, and a few other odds and ends. The first
Donald Duck collection is out in May, but it doesn’t
include his educational shorts (as it’s a chronological
collection) so I’ll probably pass on it. I will, however,
buy (and likely review) any collection that includes
“Donald Duck in Mathemagic Land.” As a future math and
physics teacher, that might be useful.

If you ever do find a DVD with Donald in Mathemagic Land on it, let us know – I would love to have a copy of that.

It should be in The Chronological Donald Volume
          2
, assuming it gets made. The Chronological
          Donald Volume 1
is due out the first week of May,
having been delayed from a December release.

One to add to your collection
    You don’t have it…
but definately add “Equilibrium” to your collection… think of a cross between “The Matrix” and “Farenheit 451” (the book… not that PoS movie)

A lot of people overlooked it when it came out… but it is a GREAT movie

It is. I have seen it, but I was away from the computer
      for a few days so I didn’t write the review. It’s a
pretty good dystopia, though, with more action than the
      rest of the genre.

I second that request… Equilibrium was a great movie that deserved more than it got.

    Stuff I’d like to see

  10. The Hidden Fortress by Kurosawa would be a great review – Lucas has credited it as inspirational material for Star Wars, and it is better viewing than Eps 1 and 2 – actually, I think you could mark me down for all the Kurosawa films, though most of them don’t fit with this site.
  11. Bladerunner
  12. The Bill & Ted movies
  13. Pi, which I’ve heard a lot about, but have never seen
  14. Mystery Men “We’ve got a blind date with Destiny – and it looks like she’s ordered the lobster”
  15. Princess Mononoke (if you did this, would it be the English Dub track, or the Japanese with subtitles?)
  16. Unbreakable
  17. Young Frankenstein

I notice you have a listing for Undergrads there – I wasn’t aware it was out on DVD, and as I’m a huge fan I was wondering where I could get my hands on that (I can’t find it on Amazon, which is why I ask).

  • fiziko says:

Re: Stuff I’d like to see

Hidden Fortress has a damn-busting scene that was
mimed shot for shot when Lucas made the trench battle
sequence of Episode IV. It’s not sci-fi or fantasy by any
stretch, and my copy looks so bad I can’t get through the
whole thing. I bought it off eBay from a guy who had over
1400 reviews, 100.0% positive, who claimed to be selling
the legal versions out of Hong Kong. The DVDs boxed sets
have a mix of Criterion Collection editions and the worst
DVD transfers I’ve ever seen, with lousy translations, so
I doubt him. Also, I’ve since noticed that he changes his
screen name on eBay every few months. If I reviewed that
one, it wouldn’t be fair, as the viewing experience would
detract too much from the movie. It’s a WWI dam-busters
    movie.

Princess Mononoke would be reviewed in the
subtitled version, as would the Macross stuff.
Undergrads used to be available on Amazon.com,
but I found it cheaper on eBay.

  • I saw “Mystery Men” last week, and I wish I hadn’t. It should have been to comic books what “Galaxy Quest” was to “Star Trek”, but it didn’t work. Sure, there were a few funny moments and some really nice quotes (“Lance Hunt wears glasses, Captain Amazing doesn’t”), but overall the jokes just fall flat.

You are dead insane man, seriously.

Sure the spleen couldn’t be lamer, and
the death of Captain Amazing was wrong, very
very wrong. Badly done and out of place, but the rest of the movie was
      excellent. Especially the Shoveler!

“God gave me a gift: I shovel well.”

That really is the only thing that bugs me about the movie – I can see why it was done, but it just doesn’t fit. The rest of the movie is absolutely great though – the quotes alone make it worth watching.
