Who is Stan Lee in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Sure, Stan the Man has been appearing in Marvel Movies (and, occasionally, comic books) for years, even making a passing appearance as a jury foreman in 1989’s made-for-tv flick, The Trial of the Incredible Hulk. The successful twenty-first century cinematic universe has given Lee his best appearances, however, as a World War II General, a modern-day Smithsonian security guard, and some guy with a truck in Thor. He even shows up in space in The Guardians of the Galaxy. We know it’s Stan Lee, of course, making amusing Easter Egg cameos. But, given that these movies and TV shows depict an interconnected universe, who is Stan in that reality? Is he an Elder of the Universe? A disguised Watcher? Do clones of one man exist for some sinister purpose? Come on, you obsessively-theorizing nerds!

  1. My theory: The creator of the universe has implanted an image into the genetic identity of all sentient races that comes closest to the concept of perceiving the creator. Individuals who have this appearance manifest on occasion through space and time.

Some of the instances, such as The Incredible Hulk and Thor are generic enough that they could actually be the same person, also, or even one of the less generic ones such as Age of Ultron. (We don’t know how far that general traveled to get to the party – he could actually be a truck owner living in New Mexico who had a bad experience with a imported drink…)

  2. It’s clearly not the same guy. Some people just have one of those faces, you know? You’re imagining things. It’s probably just swamp-gas or you know, Venus or something. Nothing to see here, citizen! Move along!

  3. I’m all for the Watcher theory, myself. With the leaked Deadpool picture, that theory might be hard to hold on to, though.

  4. It’s Standard Humanoid Camouflage #53, carefully designed by alien engineers to blend into any crowd. With minor modifications, it can be used on just about any habitable world in the galaxy.

  5. HULK THINK STAN LEE IS STAN LEE IN EVERY UNIVERSE. NOT JUST LOOKS LIKE STAN LEE. STAN LEE IS STAN LEE EVEN WHEN HE NOT STAN LEE. ARRRRRGGGGGH. HULK ALSO SEE THIS TOPIC DISCUSSED TO DEATH ON REDDIT. HULK SMAASASDLUIGAFAKLKVFEHBZFGZJ

    • Ah, Hulk. I had a feeling this topic would have been raised before, and did a very cursory google search of it. Mostly, I found articles about Stan Lee.
As for Reddit, I go there at most once a year.

  6. I think they’re all different people but descendants of a common ancestor. A proto-Stan. He really got around.
