MTV Movie Awards: SF Stiffed Again

I’m not cool like fiziko, where I’m gonna retype the whole list of nominations. I’ll just direct you to this list and point out that, except for a couple token gestures to “X-Men,” sci-fi and fantasy have been left out of another awards show.

Those token gestures: X-Men for “Best Movie,” and Hugh Jackman (the dude with the claws) for “Breakthrough Male Performance,” where he’s up against stiff competition like Tom Green. Gods help us all.

  1. Not entirely stiffed

SF didn’t do well, but Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon did well for fantasy. It was my choice for best picture at the Oscars, and it would be my pick here. I’d also give it the nod for best fight (Zhang Ziyi vs. entire bar.) If you haven’t seen it, you probably should. Most readers of this site would probably enjoy it.

While you’re at it, Memento is a fantastic movie for anyone who likes to think about the movie they are watching. It’s not sci-fi or fantasy, but it’s good. Learn as little as you can about it before going in, and you’ll enjoy it more.
