Lost Discussion: “House of the Rising Sun”

Walt and the others are shocked when Michael is brutally beaten, but only the non-English-speaking Jin and Sun know the truth behind the attack. Meanwhile Kate, Jack, Sawyer and Sayid argue about where the survivors should camp — on the beach, where they’re more likely to be seen, or in a remote inland valley where fresh water abounds; and Locke discovers Charlie’s secret.

    Another solid Ep.
I don’t know as it’s as good as the past two (Locke’s episode has still got to be one of the best), but still better than everything else on TV. It was nice to finally learn the couple’s back story, and I never thought I’d see this side of “John” from Crusade.

    what’s with the title?

The thing that confused me most about this episode was the title… are they trying to make some sort of pan-asian comment here?

This has become my favorite show, I think the writing is very crisp (“if you two are done with your verbal copulation…”), but I’m still worried about two things:

    1. What happens when they run out of origin stories? There’s only about 10 characters left…

    2. Do they have a plan in mind for some resolution at the end of this season, or is the show going to suffer from X-Files disease?

Since the title Lost is pretty ambiguous on its own, and there isn’t a traditional opening sequence, the possibilities are vast. They don’t necessarily have to be limited to being lost on an island.

Lost in time, lost in space, lost in a parallel universe, lost in life, lost artifacts of great power, lost tribe of hobbits, and so on.

Most of these have been done elsewhere, like Quantum Leap Sliders, etc. But seeing how well the current scenario (Gilligan’s Island on steroids) is being handled, I’m not too worried.

you may know this now, and it’s probably far enough back that you won’t see it, but there’s interviews with JJ out there that pretty much amount to “hey, there aren’t just 10 people on the island, you know. people will come and people will go. this is about everybody”.

i’m obviously paraphrasing, but don’t forget how cunning they can be! i wouldn’t be surprised if they sew the seeds of a few more primary characters in people who we only catch a few glimpses of. and the first season will only cover the first 20 days on the island. wait for season 2.
