The releases for this week (November 2) are below.
In other news, the release date for the fifth and
final season of Angel has just been
announced as February 15.
First, the genre releases:
- Doctor
Who
Lost In Time Collection of Rare Episodes – The
Patrick Troughton Years
1966-1969: The first of two collections out this
date. - Doctor
Who
Lost In Time Collection of Rare Episodes – The
William Harnell Years
1963-1966: The second of two. There is also a three
DVD set
with episodes from both. (I assume it’s a boxed set
packaging the
two.) - Dr.
Strangelove: or,
How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb
(40th Anniversary Two
Disk Special Edition): This is a great movie. I
already have a
copy and I’m tempted to upgrade. - Looney
Tunes –
Golden Collection, Volume Two: The first volume
was fantastic. My
copy of volume two is already en route. The second
volume includes
some great stuff, including “What’s Opera, Doc,” “One
Froggy Evening,”
and “Broomstick Bunny.” This is the only must-own
title this week, by
my count. If you missed volume one, there’s also a
convenient package
deal. The
Spotlight Collection is continuing, too, but those
are unrestored, and
only contain cartoons restored for the Golden
Collection, so I
wouldn’t recommend them as this is available. Expect
a review to take
a high priority. - Monster
Island: This is a made-for-TV movie starring
Carmen Electra that
came out not long ago. I didn’t catch it. - Mutant
X
Season One: This is a box set, with a decent
price for a full
season. - Pirates
of the
Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl (Special
Edition): See it
before the sequel comes out. - Real
Genius: A great movie that just barely qualifies
as sci-fi. (I
should get around to that review soon…) The only
reason this
release isn’t a must-own is that it’s been out for
two years, so you
should have your copies already. - Shrek
2:
Another one I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t seen.
In my defense, I
was working 70 hour work weeks the month it came
out. - Star
Trek The
Original Series – The Complete Second Season: How
many of us will
pass on this release, but would snap it up at half
that price?
Then, the non-genre releases:
- Around
the
World in 80 Days: Probably not Jackie Chan’s
best. - Comedy
10
Pack: It’s a Warner Home Video release, priced
like a normal box
set, so I suspect there’s some quality stuff here.
Would it kill them
to tell us which titles they are? - Criterion
Collection Holiday 2004 Gift Set: All of
the Criterion
Collection releases that are still in print. That’s
241 titles. If
you can afford it, get it. - Dazed
and
Confused: A new edition of the film on DVD. Very
amusing and
nostalgic. - Family
10
Pack: Another unspecified Warner Home Video
collection. - Fast
Times at
Ridgemont High: Amy Heckerling can write and
direct good teen
comedy. - Philadelphia
(Anniversary Edition): Man, if only I could
afford to buy all the
well reviewed movies I haven’t seen… - Romance
10
Pack: Another Warner Home Video batch.
Fast Times
Just a correction that Cameron Crowe wrote Fast Times at Ridgemont High, based on his book. Heckerling merely directed the movie (though she did a great job nonetheless). As a sidenote, the commentary on the initial DVD release is the longest (relative to the movie itself) I’ve ever heard as Crowe and Heckerling talk for a good 5-10 minutes after the credits end and all you see is black…
“Shrek 2” update
I made a mistake the in Shrek 2 release date. It
does come out this week, but on Friday, November 5, not
Tuesday, November 2 like the rest of these releases.
