  • Complete Collection SDBD: US
Comments SDBD titles are on Blu-Ray disks with DVD quality encoding to reduce the disk count and packaging costs. Do not expect Blu-Ray quality. Alex: I’ve noticed a few reports that there is sometimes a video quality improvement based on earlier DVD releases, but that’s probably more related to Discotek media’s authoring process. Contains all 12 episodes of the TV series, and both OVAs (Nuku-Nuku and Nuku-Nuku DASH!). The whole franchise is based around the concept of a mad scientist putting the brain of his son’s mortally injured pet cat into the body of a combat cyborg modeled after a teenage girl.

Alex: Part of Daryl Surat’s “Manga Video Holy Trinity of Suck” – an attempt to cash in on the success of Ghost in the Shell which goes weirdly anti-semetic in the last couple minutes of the second-to-last episode, and where the last episode never received a US release until this release from Discotek media.

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “If you have the cash for the set (which is not overpriced; it’s $5/movie on Blu-Ray), then I’d definitely go with the Universal Classic Monsters Blu-Ray collection.” Alex says, “Finances permitting, I would absolutely pick up the Universal Classic Monsters collection.”

  1. Tag looks like fun so I’ll probably watch it.

Heston’s Julius Caesar saved Shakespeare for me. Up to that point, my only experience was Romeo & Juliet (like most American Freshmen). That was awful. Julius Caesar was much more interesting. I think we do a disservice to our youth by forcing bad “classics” on them instead of the good stuff. Hell, to introduce kids to Shakespeare, I usually roll out Kenneth Brannagh’s Much Ado About Nothing (or the equally good Joss Whedon version).

And lastly, there are thirteen seasons of Ancient Aliens? Suddenly our current political predicament and American’s complete lack of knowledge about history makes sense. It’s frightening, but it makes sense.

    • Tag was amusing enough, but I was more in it for Jeremy Renner’s characters break down of each scene. Otherwise, you’re getting pretty much what you expect to get. It was a great thing to put on in the background while I played video games.

Anyone else see Upgrade? It wasn’t bad, and the ending was just unique enough to make it worth the watch. I was also playing video games while I watched it, so I want to rewatch it to pay a bit better attention, but I doubt it would be worth a second watch otherwise.

      • Not yet, but you’re not the first person I’ve heard mentioning Upgrade in a (semi) positive light. I’ll put it on the to-watch pile.
