Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 14 April 2019

This week, we return with a new post title with 20% more DC and 100% more dragons!  I didn’t even know Doom Patrol had started, and we are already 10 episodes in, but they will also appear here along side the warring armies of Westeros.  Out homegrown deities explore what happened to one of the more popular in the pantheon, the hammer wielding Donar.  Except for Supergirl, the other Disguised Champions are back on patrol alongside their doomed streaming exclusive friends.   Arrow’s Laurel redemptive arc hits a rocky patch, Mona reads some classic literature, and Flash gives us answers on Nora’s motivations.  The junkies in Riverdale find themselves deeper into the clutches of a cult.  Marvel gives us Cloak fighting his past while Dagger fights a sex trafficking ring.  The Orvile’s description seems like we get our classic time loop episode.  My most biggest anticipation this week however is watching Star Trek: Discovery boldly goes into its season finale.

[All synopses (and titles) from Trakt.tv or IMDB below the cut, except when there really aren’t any.  (If a show’s synopsis is a spoiler to you, do not click More…)]

American Gods – S02E06 – Donar the Great – Shadow and Mr. Wednesday seek out Dvalin to repair the Gungnir spear.

Game of Thrones – S08E01 – Winterfell – Arriving at Winterfell, Jon and Daenerys struggle to unite a divided North. Jon Snow gets some big news. (See Bureau42 for a review!)

Supergirl – S04E18 – Crime and Punishment – Kara and Lena head to Stryker’s Island to search for clues on how to defeat Lex. At the prison, Kara tries to befriend a nosy prisoner, Steve, who may have insight into what Lex was doing, while Lena studies an array of puzzles Lex left behind in the hopes of discovering his whereabouts. While there, a prison riot breaks out and Kara must find a way to stop the prisoners without revealing her secret identity as Supergirl. Meanwhile, Kelly encourages James to talk to someone for his PTSD. (Returns 21 April 2019)

Arrow – S07E18 – Lost Canary – After being accused of murder and having her criminal past exposed, Laurel goes full Black Siren and teams up with an old criminal acquaintance, Shadow Thief, to go on a crime spree around Star City. While Dinah aims to bring Laurel in, Felicity refuses to give up on her friend and tries everything to get through to her, even summoning Sara Lance for help. However, Laurel rebuffs all her efforts, forcing the former friends to face off against each other.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – S04E11 – Séance & Sensibility – When Mona discovers that her favorite author, Jane Austen, might be at the epicenter of a magical alert, Mona, Sara, Charlie and Zari find themselves in 1809. With Nate still dealing with family issues, Constantine and Rory perform a séance and receive a message from the other world that rocks Constantine to his core. Meanwhile, Ray and Nora are forced into close quarters.

The Flash – S05E18 – Godspeed – After discovering that Nora is working with Thawne, Barry and Iris disagree about how to handle their daughter in the wake of this shocking news. Team Flash isn’t sure they can trust Nora, so they go through her journal to find out exactly how she came to work alongside their greatest nemesis.

Riverdale – S03E18 – Chapter Fifty-Three: Jawbreaker – When a tainted batch of fizzle rocks makes its way through Riverdale, Jughead and FP set out to find who’s responsible. After asking Veronica to help get him into an upcoming boxing tournament, Archie quickly learns he may be in over his head. Elsewhere, Betty makes one last attempt to rescue Alice from The Farm’s grip, and Toni becomes unsettled by a sudden change in Cheryl’s behavior.

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger – S02E04 – Rabbit Hold – Still on her quest to find out more about the sex trafficking ring, Tandy takes a dangerous trip to find Mayhem, who may have the answers she is looking for. Meanwhile, Tyrone’s past actions catch up to him and put Adina in harm’s way.

  1. Is anyone watching Doom Patrol? Do I need to go back and try to catch it?

Also, am I missing anything else? Is Gotham a thing?

Do I need to write a site review for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s second half of season 1? I am rewatching the whole thing because it caught my wife’s interest, and I realize it is a lot more cohesive of a story than I realized.

    • I started watching Doom Patrol a short while ago, but will do the reviews for the entire season as a Weekend Review. It’s pretty good. I don’t put it at quite the level of Marvel’s more adult shows, but it’s a lot more bonkers, if you enjoy that.

Also: who ever thought the Doom Patrol, a comic that has never been a real hit for DC, would have its own successful show?

    • I know, right? This week’s episode actually uses one of them and I just about fell out of my chair when it happened.

It’s probably a budget thing. But they are, at least, working on some sort of story arc that’s character related and, to be fair, with a magic driven plot line, their powers aren’t particularly useful in most of the situations.

I suspect we’ll be seeing a cast shuffle for next season based on some of the character arcs. I expect the usual “guest regular” swap out for the start of the season assuming Constantine’s arc completes but I’m also expecting a shake-up as a result of the crossover.
