  1. I’m not caught up on this. Are the culture wars still affecting the Hugo vote, or have they found a way to move beyond that and just reward good writing?

  2. I cannot comment on “culture wars” (which are not new to SF– the notion that the Hugos or even publishing has always been about the best writing is problematic). I can say that SF/Fantasy used to be a much smaller part of publishing and media, and active fandom used to be smaller, so that the average fan was at least familiar with a significant percentage of the nominees. That hasn’t been true for some time, so that any number of solid works exist that many fans don’t know, and the number of SF/Fantasy series/movies has increased to the point that no one can possibly be watching all of them.
