Comments Anime film based on a novel from the author of Vampire Hunter D, about a mysterious force that strips the knowledge of pretty much everything from most of humanity, with a handful of survivors attempting go find out the cause in the aftermath.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “On the anime side, I’m going with Gunbuster – I’m glad that it’s finally gotten an anime re-release in full, and on Blu-Ray. In 4K, I saw Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves in theaters, and I had a lot of fun… but that Arrow Video release of The Last Starfighter has really got me. So, I’m going with The Last Starfighter as the 4K release, and Dungeons & Dragons if you don’t have a way to watch 4K yet.” Blaine says, “I’m also going with The Last Starfighter in this bunch.”

  1. This week brings a number of films that I haven’t seen but want to. Whether they’re worth buying is another matter. The latest Dark Side collection features some lesser-known 50s noir. Both Queen Christina (with Garbo) and Madonna of the Seven Moons have solid reputations, the former indirectly handling and the latter expressly handling subjects that were controversial at the time.

I’ve read the YA classic Speak and know that it also became a graphic novel, but somehow I missed that the young Kristen Stewart starred in a well-reviewed film adaptation back in 2004.

Space Oddity, an indie film about a near-future guy who wants to go to Mars, certainly sounds interesting.

  2. D&D is on my watchlist (I seem to have been too busy to catch it in theaters). Also, 65 looks like the kind of dumb sci-fi action movie that is totally my jam.

I normally don’t care for musician biopics, but What’s Love Got To Do With It is excellent. It’s not easy to sit through some parts, but it’s brutally honest and the performances are stellar.
