Amazon is partnering with Hidive/Sentai Filmworks to add a channel for them, much as they have done with Crunchyroll, so now a whole slew of anime films and television series that are normally on Hidive are also available on Amazon Prime through that channel, and for separate digital purchase. As there are over 300 anime titles this week, we are also changing the usual format. We begin with the picks of the week, then list all non-anime titles, and wrap up with the anime titles after that.
The picks of the week. Alex says, “I’m going with the Babylon 5 collection on the DVD/Blu-Ray front. On the Anime front, while not all the good stuff from Hidive is here (none of the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes, none of Armored Trooper VOTOMS), there is a lot of really good stuff from Hidive available through the channel subscription, so that might be worth subscribing to, if you don’t already have a Hidive subscription already.” Blaine says, “I’m also recommending the Blu-Ray of the remastered Babylon 5. I’ve never seen Babylon 5. I started it and watched the chronologically (in-universe) first movie, and was turned off from the show. I am told that reaction is pretty normal for that movie. I think I also tried a single episode someone recommended. It wasn’t bad but I didn’t know the characters, so it didn’t it didn’t hit that well.
Honestly, watching a few episodes at a time for a podcast could work.
The first season is more rewarding on a second watch, when you realize how much foreshadowing is in it and how subtle it is. Seasons 3 and 4 are two of the best seasons of any television series ever. The podcast will release episodes 30 years to the day after the original release (except for the first movie and the post-Crusade movies, so we wait weeks between episodes instead of years). We’ll cover all of the novels and comics, too. Each episode will end with a segment letting you know what will be important to the future, but not why it will be important. (Think “Chekov left a gun on that mantlepiece,” and not “that’s the gun that will be used to kill John Doe, whom we know well, 17 episodes from now”.)
We should be able to maintain the schedule, since we recorded episode 51 this morning.
