Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “On the anime side, Evangelion 3.0+1.11 is a fantastic conclusion to the film series and to the Evangelion saga – and on the 4K UHD front I’m going with UHF, without hesitation.” Blaine says, “in a week with multiple Best Picture winners, I’m going with Galaxy Quest or the Star Trek movies, if you don’t own them already.”

  1. To those I add Taxi Driver, one of the definitive films of the 1970s. It continues to hold up as a brilliant and uncomfortable watch marked by excellent performances.

    Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia are both excellent, and feature Alec Guinness. The latter features hidden bonuses for Star Wars fans, because so much of Lucas’s visual style– down to specific shots and locations– derived from Lawrence….
