Comments Alex: So, this documentary takes the perspective that the only people who made significant contributions to hip-hop were US-born African Americans (specifically defined by the director as those related to black slaves from the American south), and that Puerto Ricans and Jamaicans (either in Jamaica or immigrants to the US) made no meaningful contributions, and claims that they did are actions of colonialism. Which is… a take.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Well, if you have a way to play UHD disks and don’t own Jaws already, this is as good a release as any. Otherwise, I’m kind of going for the Three Stooges collection.” Blaine says, “I will also make Jaws my top choice, although my second choice would be the Beverly Hills Cop collection (even though the first is the only one I’m tempted to rewatch of these; I’ll get around to the new one some day).”

  1. This week features a lot of good offerings, including Jaws and that Stooges collection (If you’re going to buy Stooges, that looks pretty definitive). There is also Furiosa, LOTR, and The Last Emperor (see even if you don’t buy– but it’s likely everyone has seen at least one of them already). The People’s Joker looks like fun, though I’ve never seen it. And Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost, the follow-up to the franchise-reviving Zombie Island has a tiny bit more bite than typical Scoobies and an interesting twist.

Le Doulos has a solid reputation, but I cannot speak for it one way or l’autre.
