Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “In the Heat of the Night is not just one of the best movies of 1967, it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I can heartily recommend a Criterion Collection release.” Alex says, “I’m also going with In The Heat of the Night for my pick.”

  1. Crocodile Dundee is one of those cute movies that somehow made it big. It’s a bit of a product of its time (very ’80s in some moments) but it’s worth a watch — it is quite a cultural milestone.

  2. In The Heat of the Night is (IMO) one of those cases where the movie is better than the book. They ran with the premise, emphasized the focus on the relationship between the two cops, and even changed the solution.

And the town’s name, but for practical reasons. Due to issues with filming in the actual American south, they shot in Sparta, Illinois, and then kept the name “Sparta” since it was already on the signs.

  3. Clueless is a classic. Taking the story of ‘Emma’ and giving it a modern polish was brilliant. I feel like this and 10 Things I Hate About You tried something, succeeded, and then the idea was completely forgotten.

Or maybe I’m just an out-of-touch old dude.

    • When Wallace Shawn and Cary Elwes came to the local con, I did what I usually do: pack everything I own that they are in, and let them choose which one to sign.

Wallace Shawn passed on signing Princess Bride, Deep Space Nine, and a pile of Pixar titles, instead choosing to sign Clueless. Making the movie was a great experience, and he found Heckerling actually had something to say, which often isn’t the case.

(For the curious, Elwes passed on Princess Bride and The X-Files to sign a season of Psych.)
