Rowling to kill two in final Potter book

chad writes, According to this Reuters article, J.K. Rowling is going to kill off two characters in the final Harry Potter book. Notice, however, that Rowling says, “two die that I didn’t intend to die,” while the Reuters headline assume that only two will die. Rowling’s statement leaves room for additional deaths, provided she had intended from the beginning for them to happen.

If Voldemort doesn’t die, it will be an extremely disappointing finale. But one would hope she planned to kill him all along.

  2. Bets?
Anyone want to make some spoiler-free bets?

I bet it’ll be both Voldemort and Harry, just ’cause not killing Voldemort would piss off millions of people world-wide and not killing Harry would mean she’d be constantly under pressure to do sequels, which she probably doesn’t want to do. Of course they could kill Voldemort and Snape, just cause I know Snape’s movie death scene would be well done.

It can’t be Hagrid, they’d never be able to move the body.

It can’t be Her-mine-o-ninnie or Ron as those two are fairly clearly going to end up together.

Of course I have some sympathy for Snape, not because he’s a complete asshat towards Harry but rather because he was constantly picked on by Harry’s dad when they were in Hogwarts twenty years earlier, but that’s a different story.

It also can’t be Crookshanks as the character is up for the love interest in Garfield 3.

If we take the bit about "two characters die that I didn’t intend" to imply "additional characters", then I’d go for the Dusleys getting caught in some magical crossfire. Failing that, most likely a couple more of the Hogwarts faculty or other members of The Order of The Pheonix; Moody’s definitely the type for a selfless sacrifice I think.

I’m actually more intrigued by whoever it is that got the stay of execution; Hagrid and Snape would be my favourites here, but it could be that Harry was initially meant to kill Draco Malfoy in a moment of rage…

I’ll guess Neville. His character arc seems to be going from comic relief to sidekick to hero. In the first few books there was all that hinting that he could have been The One, up until Harry hears the prophesy that only the person it’s about can hear. But since Neville isn’t the real hero, his final act of heroism may have been originally plotted as fatally flawed.

If she kills off Harry, there will be millions of people very, very dissapointed in this book. I can see her doing it, but the ongoing value of the entire series will be deminished for it. It would be like Luke dying at the end of ROTJ, or like Hicks and Newt dying and Ripley being impregnated with an Alien queen … oh wait.

Like I was saying, how I view the entire series would be clouded over severely by Harry’s death.

I think she’ll do it as she’s not doing a Hollywood novel therefore wouldn’t be adversed to doing so to fully tie up the story, bring it full circle, so to speak. I could see it ending up with Harry killing Voldemort but due to x/y/z he ends up dying from the severity of what he went through. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Yes, but all the movies have been made into Hollywood MOVIES. If Harry dies in the book, it will be very hard to get people in the seats for the movie.

Hmmm. There’s just too many Weasleys for them all to make it. :-P Maybe McGonnigle? She came a bit close in OOtP and she’s no spring chicken.

Seriously, though, I’m betting on Lupin getting it in order to complete the set – Mooney, Padfoot, Prongs. Somehow I think Snape lives, I dunno why.

My question is whether (big supposition and spoiler) Regulus Black is indeed RB and if he dies, given what could happen vis-a-vis his relationship to Harry.

      Maybe Draco?

      • Re: Bets?
I believe that RB is already dead (I believe they said so in Book 5) and that he stole the horcrux some time ago.

My vote is for Lupin and Tonks. They strike me as one of those romantic tragedies in the making.

I agree with the Voldemort getting killed thing, but if Harry got killed wouldn’t that piss off millions as well? Neway, ppl should just get ovr that she’s only writing 7 books and they need to find a new book to read. I think she’ll kill Voldemort and another good guy, but not Harry, though it would be interesting, in a non-creepy way.

i agree with the whole Ron and Hermione thing, it was especially obvious in the fourth MOVIE when her and ron had the whole fight about the ball thing.

I understand the whole sympathy 4 snape thing, but i bet he did something 2 deserve it, i’m sry i just don’t hav sympathy for a guy who killed Dumbledore, though i hav a feeling he didn’t rele die, she just made him seem 2 immortal in the other books and to just kill him off with the avadacadabra spell seems 2 simple. I mean he was the only man VOldemort feared right?

Neway that’s just all my opinion, u can take it or leave it

  3. My SWAG
Malfoy I think may be the one that actually survives.

I don’t think Harry dies, but I do think that he may become a muggle in the process.

      I think so too.
The ultimate "growing up" metaphor: No more magic.

I hope not. The "wizard gives up his magic to save the world" bit has already been definitively done in LeGuin’s EarthSea novels.

My short list for possible deaths: Snape (though I have a suspicion he could actually end a hero rather than a villian), Neville, one of the Weasleys besides Ron. And Voldemort, of course.

Speaking of the Weasleys. It could be a really profound sacrifice of either Mr. or Mrs. Weasley to save their children (or Ron and Hermoinie). Heck the two deaths could be both of them.
