Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Now, the ideal way to watch Speed Racer would be in 3D IMAX (which is how I saw it the first time), but if you don’t have the option, UHD is the next best thing. Otherwise, Body Heat, and Maoyu are on my watchlists, respectively.” Blaine says, “Looney Tunes Collection is easily my pick of those I’ve seen. Of those I haven’t seen, I’ve heard good things about Body Heat, and my tendency to see all adaptations of the Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde stories means I feel compelled to check out Bride! at some point, despite damning reviews.”

  1. I had completely forgotten about Fallout. I started it, then decided to wait for Season Two to drop before really getting into it. Seems like we all sort of forgot it was a thing.

Bride! had some really damning reviews, including some loud feminist voices who objected to the “this is the story Mary Shelley really meant to tell” concept. They found that taking the agency away from the oldest female voice in science fiction to be pretentious.

Super Mario Galaxy seems to have pissed off the fans. It had nothing to do with the game of the same name except include one character from it. Why Nintendo paired with Illumination is beyond me.

Maybe I’ll get around to the other Avatar films. The first one felt like such a waste of money and exactly the thing that people criticize about Sci-Fi…all flash…no substance. I’m pretty sure I almost pulled an eye muscle rolling them when they started info dumping “unobtainium”.

    • I still haven’t seen any Avatar films. I didn’t get a chance to see it in 3D IMAX, and that felt like the right way to do it, so I just wasn’t excited to see it after. It doesn’t help that the friend who tried to talk me into it didn’t rave about a single story element, but only great visuals and sound that seemed like Final Fantasy X. When I showed her that game, she concluded Avatar ripped off FFX, and then I was even less inclined to watch it.

      • The plot is the “White Savior” trope. It’s Dances with Wolves/Pocahontas/Fern Gully with a much bigger budget.

Honestly, the numbers it got at the Box Office are probably high because A. 3D films charge more per ticket and B. These made bank overseas because the plot is so simple, it translates easily.

        • I am surprised non-European audiences would enjoy the white savior movies.

(I am also unsure why they do so much business, they look kinda neat, but that’s the best I can say for them.)
