I was not prepared for that twist. Emotionally or mentally. They definitely took a page out of the Scrubs playbook with the silly taking a hard turn into serious.
This was a 46 minute reminder of why I could never get into soap operas.
I get that the showrunners decided that their “strange new worlds” would be exploring a variety of genres, which is why there are so many gimmick episodes this season, but it starting to feel like they don’t even know what they want their show to be when it’s being itself.
So many missed opportunities with the melodrama. M’Benga is already talking about changing roles. Show us why instead of this “space madness” gibberish. La’an has been tortured by possibilities all season. Use that to drive her melodramatic choices. I feel like the whole “Ortegas and Scotty hate each other” bit that came out of nowhere in the season premier was just to set up an arc that ends with them romantically involved. A soap opera would be the perfect place to launch a romance. They promised us more Sybok after season 2, and I fear this is going to be it, although I do need any return of Sybok to either be pulling strings off screen or to be in a plotline that is off the books and only involving Spock and characters who don’t appear in TOS.
Star Trek is my all-time favourite fictional franchise. I shouldn’t be worried about whether or not I’ll like this one every week of the season, but here we are.
Credit where credit is due: for all of my concerns with Kurtzman as the top dog from a story standpoint, it does seem like he’s done a better job than Berman about creating an environment where the cast look forward to coming to work. I’m sure they’ve had a lot of fun this season.
