The releases are definitely getting better.
First, the DVD releases:
- American Dad!, Vol. 2
- Army of Shadows – Criterion Collection: As I’ve said many times, Criterion doesn’t release bad movies.
- Arthur and the Invisibles
- Banacek – The First Season: While he rarely dealt with anything as filthy as murder, Banacek did have the occassional good case. He also had one case that was very frustrating, in which the only way the audience could solve it (as the investigation was off screen) was to realize that the only way Dick Van Patten would appear on the show is if he was the killer.
- Becket
- Beetlejuice: Finally out in a new printing. Now if only they’d get around to a rerelease of The Nightmare Before Christmas…
- Blue Collar Comedy Tour
- Blue Submarine No. 6: Anime Legends Complete Collection
- Bunny Whipped
- Chasing Liberty
- Coach – The Second Season
- The Color Purple: So good, I can forgive them for misspelling “colour.”
- Comedy Kings 50 Movie Mega Pack: A 12 disk collection.
- The Dead Girl
- Denzel Washington Spotlight Collection: Includes “Inside Man,” “The Hurricane,” “The Bone Collector” and “Mo’ Better Blues.”
- ER – The Complete Seventh Season
- Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe – The Complete Saturday Morning Serial
- The Fountain
- Frasier – The Ninth Season: It is the rare sitcom that can run nine years without getting stale. Cheers managed to do it. In my opinion, Frasier didn’t. Obviously some disagree with me, as Frasier consistently sells better.
- Full Metal Jacket: Kubrick. ‘Nuff said.
- GoodFellas
- Goonies
- The Greatest Conflict Collection: 90 World War II documentaries on 11 disks.
- The Green Mile: A single disk edition.
- Gremlins: Remember, don’t expose them to sunlight, don’t get them wet, and never, ever feed them after midnight.
- Heat
- Home Improvement – The Complete Sixth Season: The most intelligent joke these guys ever did was when Earl Hindman went on stage at the Emmys with a tiny little fence to hold in front of his face.
- The Josephine Baker Collection: Kino does a nice job with these. Includes “Zou Zou,” “Princess Tam Tam” and “Siren of the Tropics.”
- The Last Detective – Series 3
- The Last Sin Eater
- M*A*S*H – Goodbye, Farewell and Amen: Includes the series finale, and the bonus content from the complete series box set so that those who bought individual season releases don’t have to rebuy everything.
- Martin – The Complete Second Season
- Martin Scorsese Collection, Vol. 2: Includes “The Departed,” “The Aviator,” “Mean Streets” and “Goodfellas.”
- Masters of Horror – Right to Die
- The Matrix: A fresh release.
- Memoirs of a Geisha: This is the single disc edition of a pretty good movie.
- Michael J. Fox Comedy Favorites Collection: Includes “The Hard Way,” “For Love or Money,” “Greedy,” and “Secret of My Success.” I’ve only seen the last two. “Greedy” was decent, but “Secret of My Success” is still great.
- Monarch of the Glen – Series Six
- Moon Phase – Phase 6
- Natural Born Killers
- Ocean’s Eleven: When watching this Soderbergh film, try very hard to focus on how cool and flashy it is while simultaneously ignoring how many coincidences, lucky breaks, and stupid security guards the plan absolutely depended on.
- The Omega Man
- Pan’s Labyrinth
- The Perfect Storm
- The Red Green Show – 1998 Season: Remember, if the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Excellent Canadian comedy.
- Rent
- Robson Arms: The Complete First Season: Not so excellent Canadian comedy.
- The Rockford Files – Season Four: Can you afford $200 a day, plus expenses?
- Rosewood
- See Spot Run
- The Shawshank Redemption (Single Disc Edition): This stands as the best Stephen King movie I’ve ever seen.
- The Siege (Martial Law Edition)
- Stomp The Yard
- Tex Avery’s Droopy – The Complete Theatrical Collection: Now there’s an enthusiastic lead character.
- The Thirst: I haven’t heard of it, but it definitely uses the same casting agent as Mutant Enemy.
- Vengeance Is Mine – Criterion Collection
- Wanted – Dead or Alive – Season One
- Wanted – Dead or Alive – Season Two
- The War at Home – The Complete First Season
- Wings – The Fourth Season
Now, the Blu-Ray releases:
Here are the HD DVD releases:
- The Fountain: This is actually a DVD/HD-DVD combo release.
- The Road Warrior
Finally, the pick of the week. I’ve got to go with The Shawshank Redemption. It’s not the first (or even best) DVD release of this movie, but it’s a great movie nonetheless.
Mm
And this ain’t one of ’em.
Now the Droopy thing, that rocks.
Amazon.com (and thus the list) has a typo!
It’s not "Blue Submarine Vol. 6". It’s "Blue Submarine No. 6" – as in "The 6th Blue Submarine", instead of "Volume 6 of Blue Submarine".
Just thought I’d clarify that point.
I really should watch that again and review it…
(Note: this means that if you liked my review of "Hellboy: Sword of Storms" – with the exception of my few errors, and would like me to review more, please let me know.)
Re: Amazon.com (and thus the list) has a typo!
Corrected. Thanks.
