Premise

Hulk faces Dr. Strange as directly as Strange allows him.

High Point

Pak didn’t forget how powerful Dr. Strange really is.

Low Point

Zom? Seriously? Of all the villains they could have mined from Marvel’s archives, this wasn’t one of the better ones. I’m really hoping Pak does something more interesting with him than has been done before.

The Scores

This is original for the series, as it’s the first issue that wasn’t an all out smash fest. There’s a plot coming forward, which is good, as mindless smashing can get tiresome after a while. I give it 4 out of 6.

The artwork is good, depicting the story well, and switching styles in the flashbacks to match the art style of the original artists. That’s a nice piece of continuity for those of us who read “Planet Hulk.” I give it 5 out of 6.

The story is also well done. As mentioned above, a more intelligent plot is forming, which is a big bonus in the story. I can enjoy mindless smashing as much as the next guy, but five issues of it would have been straining. I give it 5 out of 6.

The characterization is well done, for Bruce, the Hulk, Iron Fist, Dr. Strange, and General Thunderbolt Ross. Each character has a distinct voice and nice motives. I give it 5 out of 6.

The emotional response is great. It kept the fun, and added some depth. My initial reaction to Zom wasn’t thrilling given his original plotline, but I’ll give Pak the chance to change my mind. I give it 5 out of 6.

The flow is fun and smooth. This story is moving along at a very brisk pace. I give it 5 out of 6.

Overall, it’s a solid issue, maintaining the established momentum and revealing some aspects of the Warbound’s larger plan. I give it 5 out of 6.

In total, World War Hulk #3 receives 34 out of 42.
