October is upon us, and with it, the first wave of summer blockbuster titles and horror flicks, mixed in with some healthy library titles (many in high definition formats) designed to fill the shelves in time for the Christmas shopping season.
First, the DVD releases:
- 250 Movie Family Pack
- 250 Movie Horror Pack: There’s a reason these 250 only cost $70. Still, the 50 movie packs had a couple of gems.
- 250 Movie Mystery Pack
- 1408
- The Blue Planet – Seas Of Life
- Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Collector’s Edition): The DVD edition is slightly more expensive than the Blu-Ray version. Why? Blu-Ray capacity gets all the same content on one disc instead of two.
- Caligula (Three Disc Imperial Edition): Even stars Helen Mirren and Malcolm McDowell were surprised by what they saw in the finished product. This is most definitely NOT one to share with the kids.
- Christmas Television Favorites
- Craziest Christmas Collection: This seems to contain an unspecified set of Warner Bros. Christmas cartoons.
- Criminal Minds – The Second Season
- Entourage – Season 3, Part 2
- Evil Aliens
- Fantastic Four – Rise of the Silver Surfer (The Power Cosmic Edition)
- Fantastic Four 2 Pack: Single disc editions of both movies.
- Felix the Cat: The Complete 1958-1959 Series
- Funny Face (50th Anniversary Edition)
- Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex – The Laughing Man
- Audrey Hepburn 5-Pack: Includes the new edition of “Funny Face,” along with “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Roman Holiday,” “Sabrina” and “Paris When It Sizzles.” It lacks my favourite Hepburn, Charade.
- How I Met Your Mother – Season Two
- Jericho – The First Season
- Jungle Book (Two Disc 40th Anniversary Platinum Edition): If I weren’t migrating to the High Def formats, I’d totally pick this up.
- Little People, Big World – Season 1
- Metalocalypse – Season One
- The Most Dangerous Game
- Planet Earth and the Blue Planet Seas Of Life (Special Collector’s Edition)
- Prom Night
- Pumpkinhead 4 – Blood Feud: I’d use this as evidence that any movie will spawn sequels if it makes money, but there’s a much better example of this in the fourth entry in another franchise coming later in the alphabet.
- Sci Fi Trash-O-Rama: Includes “Creature of Destruction,” “UFO Target Earth” and “The Flying Saucer Mystery”
- The Secret World Of Alex Mack – Season 1
- Shark – Season One
- The Sarah Silverman Program – Season One
- Species (Collector’s Edition): I don’t know what makes this more collectable than the special edition that came out the same day as the third movie in the series, and the product description on Amazon certainly doesn’t give me any clues. I’m guessing the “sneak peek at #3!” bonus feature was likely replaced with a “sneak peek at #4” bonus feature, but that’s only a guess.
- Species IV – The Awakening (Unrated): Now you know what I was referring to in the “Pumpkinhead 4” comments above.
- Star Trek: The Next Generation – Complete Series: All seven seasons in one big box. The price works out to a reasonable $45 per season, which is a whole heck of a lot better than they were the first time they came out.
- Tenjho Tenge: Complete Collection
- The Year Without a Santa Claus (Deluxe Edition)
- Yugo the Negotiator: Complete Collection
Now, the Blu-Ray releases:
- Bram Stoker’s Dracula
- Dawn of the Dead
- The Day After Tomorrow
- Day of the Dead
- Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn
- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
- Halloween
- A Room With A View
Here are the HD DVD releases:
- The Ant Bully
- The Departed
- The Fountain
- Good Night and Good Luck
- Happy Feet
- Lady in the Water
- The Lake House
- Letters From Iwo Jima
- A Room With A View
- Rumor Has It
- Superman Returns
- Top Gun
Finally, the pick of the week. I’m going with The Jungle Book, which edges out FF2 and numerous high def library titles simply because of its broader appeal.
Caligula
Caligula is pornography masquerading as a historical movie. Probably don’t want to share it with the wife either.

Sarah Silverman
Is this show any good? I really like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, but I don’t know anything about Silverman.
Re: Sarah Silverman
It’s hit and miss. Ok, it’s more hit and miss and miss and hit and miss and miss. It can be disturbingly non-PC at times, though, and you’ve got to love that.
S2 is starting on TV this week I think, and I /seriously/ doubt there’ll be any continuity you can’t figure out, so you can give it a try. just, uh, don’t expect anything high-brow.
