Doctor Who Discussion: The Next Doctor

visionary_coward writes, Another Christmas, another chance for the Doctor to save the Earth. What did people this of this year’s Christmas special?

And will anyone be doing regular Who reviews anytime soon here?

  1. Good, but…
Everything seemed just a little forced in terms of the joviality at the start, then the later dangers although the Steampunk CyberKing was rather cool.

The lack of a proper companion certainly takes something away: like Gin & Tonic without the tonic, or bangers & mash without the spuds.

Not the best Christmas special, but an hour or so well spent.

Yeah, it did do well to help us last until the next season specials.

I noticed the Cybercontroller’s ‘handle-bars’ had a notch taken out of them, and then put back later on. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional, but I caught it.

I don’t understand why the obsession with making giant versions of characters in order to make them more menacing. I have no idea why Cybermen would have a bipedal invasion ‘ship’, anyways. It was very kewl and fun, but it reminded me of old school He-man introducing the toy-of-the-week.

I thought it was something of an homage to mecha type anime, Godzilla, and Spaceballs among others. It was like they were issuing a challenge to identify all the references to other works. I quite enjoyed it, actually.

  2. I thought it was well-paced and well written …
As a regular episode it was above the cut. As a Christmas special, last season’s Christmas ep was special, but it was certainly better than the 2006 Christmas ep.

This Doctor says "I am *so* sorry" more than any other Doctor. On the other hand I do like him offering unique individuals a choice.

I’d love to see a species or organism take him up on it. They could be a powerful ally.

  3. Fun
I enjoyed it very much. Honestly I’m not all that hung up on the no companion thing, especially since the BBC have yet to make ME the companion OR accept ANY of my suggestions about the part.
