Amazon.com’s “New Releases” page, where I get my source data, seems to be down, showing only up to the March 10 release date. I used the list from “Amazon.ca” instead. As such, I may have missed a couple of titles that come out on different schedules on different sides of the borders, and some of the ASIN numbers used to build links may be off. (I checked most of them, but I’m not sure I checked them all.) If you get a dead link, let me know and I’ll fix it.
First, the DVD picks:
- Andy Richter Controls the Universe: Complete Series
- Aria: The Natural – Season 2
- Baccano: Volume 1
- Chrono Crusade Complete Collection: No relation to Chrono Trigger, is instead about a pistol packing, demon-hunting nun in the 1920s.
- Claymore Vol. 4
- Doctor Who Megaset, Vol. 2: Specific contents aren’t available for this monster set, but it’s probably safe to assume it includes all of the individual releases that have hit since the first Megaset came out, as Vol. 1 had all releases to date.
- Forbidden Hollywood Collection Vol. 3: Includes “Other Men’s Women,” “The Purchase Price,” “Frisco Jenny,” “Midnight Mary,” “Heroes For Sale,” “Wild Boys of the Road,” and a documentary on one of the creators.
- A Galaxy Far, Far Away: 10th Anniversary Edition: Documentary about Star Wars fandom, I’m uncertain of its quality, admittedly solely due to the presence of Roger Corman, Adam Carrolla, Jimmy Kimmel, and Joe Pesci on the cast. It could be fantastic, but I’m not holding my breath.
- Happily N’Ever After 2: Snow White
- I”s: This is actually I”s, and it’s sequel, I”s Pure combined to make one brick.
- In Treatment
- The Last Metro – Criterion Collection: A Truffaut film, also available on Blu-Ray this week
- Lilo and Stitch: Big Wave Edition
- Never Say Never Again: This remake of “Thunderball” was made by a different production company, and doesn’t get included in the box sets because of that.
- The Odd Couple: The “Centennial Collection” edition
- Petite Princess Yuci Complete Collection
- Quantum of Solace (Single Disc Edition): The latest Bond outing, reviewed here.
- Quantum of Solace (Two Disc Special Edition)
- Room 222: Season One
- Solty Rei Complete
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars – A Galaxy Divided: The first few episodes of the new series. I haven’t seen the series myself. The Amazon reviews of this release are overwhelmingly negative, but if you actually read them, you find they are complaining about a four episode release rather than a full season release, and most reviewers are happy with the actual content of the series.
- To Catch A Thief: The “Centennial Collection” edition of the Hitchcock classic.
- Trinity Blood Complete
- Venture Bros.: Season Three
- Voltron: Volume 7
- Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter / Under the Hood: Those who’ve read the source material will recognize this “bonus” material.
- Yugo the Negotiator Complete
Now, the Blu-Ray picks:
- The 400 Blows – Criterion Collection: The Truffaut classic
- Big Stan: Yes, people still pay Rob Schneider to do… whatever it is that he does.
- The Fast and Furious Trilogy: Hurry! Before it becomes a quadrilogy! (Sadly, I’m only joking about the “hurry” part.)
- Goldfinger: The third entry in the franchise.
- James Bond Collection, Vol. 3: Includes “Goldfinger,” “The World Is Not Enough” and “Moonraker.” It does not include the “Never Say Never Again” Blu-Ray, also available this week.
- The Last Metro – Criterion Collection: Another Truffaut film
- Moonraker: The Bond movie that was rushed into production when Star Wars made so much money.
- Never Say Never Again: This remake of “Thunderball” was made by a different production company, and doesn’t get included in the box sets because of that.
- Quantum of Solace: The latest Bond outing, reviewed here.
- Venture Bros.: Season Three
- Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter / Under the Hood: Those who’ve read the source material will recognize this “bonus” material.
- The World Is Not Enough: With Pierce Brosnan as Bond and Denise Richards as Christmas Jones
:
Finally, the picks of the week. AceCaseOR recommends “The World Is Not Enough” on Blu-Ray. Fiziko recommends “The 400 Blows” for those who can watch a subtitled movie, and “Goldfinger” to the rest.
Really?
The World is Not Enough? I dragged some friends to see that one in the theatre and when it was over I felt the need to personally apologise.
Re: Really?
I liked it – though I saw it on video rather than in theaters, and, actually, I thought it was a different thing for the franchise to have Elektra King is the Mastermind, instead of Renard.
Clone Wars
I remember reading somewhere (sorry, can’t remember the source) that a full-season DVD of the Star Wars: Clone Wars series will be released in the future. So I recommend not purchasing these interim releases. If you need to watch them, they’re available online at starwars.com.
Some good ones this week
Venture brothers season 3 is a definite buy for me. Followed by Quantum of Solace. If I’ve got some extra cash I’ll give Andy Richter controls the Universe a thought.
If I didn’t already own copies of them I’d probably pick up the Lilo and Stich re-release and Solty Rei boxset.
Re: Some good ones this week
I’d seen a bit of the beginning of Solty Rei before it got licensed, and I kind of liked what I saw, but it was licensed before the end of the series, and I haven’t gotten around to adding it to my Netflix Queue yet. It is, though, on my long, long list of Anime I Need To Watch (and possibly review)
