We’re into week two of a three week “dry” spell. There are a couple of worthy titles, but the heavy hitters wait out the first half of July when everyone’s watching their movies on the big screen.
First, the DVD picks:
- The Beloved Rogue
- Callan, Set 1
- Coco Chanel
- Doctor Who: The Rescue / The Romans (Episodes 11 and 12)
- Doctor Who: Attack of the Cybermen (Episode 138)
- Five Fingers
- Flying By
- Freedom Complete Collection: Anime about warring motorcycle gangs on the moon, with the leader of one of the gangs getting caught in a vast conspiracy. Why yes, Katsuhiro Otomo is working on this. How did you guess!
- Grave of the Fireflies: Re-release of the incredibly depressing anime by Studio Ghibli that ADV rescued from the wreckage of Central Park Media’s demise.
- The John Barrymore Collection: Kino always does a great job on these sets. Includes “Sherlock Holmes,” “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “The Beloved Rogue” and “The Tempest.” They’ve previously released “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” and the other three also see individual releases today.
- Kath and Kim: Season One
- Kaze No Stigma – Season 1, Part 1: It looks like your standard Shonen show, with a bit of an internal family rivaly theme.
- Kiddy Grade Complete
- Knowing
- Lonely Are The Brave
- Matlock, Season Three
- Murder, She Wrote: Complete Season Ten
- Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. 15: Includes their takes on “The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy,” “The Girl in Lover’s Lane,” “Zombie Nightmare” and “Racket Girls.”
- Near Dark
- Night Train
- Now and Then, Here and There Complete Collection: Another series rescued from the ashes CPM’s demise.
- Peanuts: 1960’s Collection: Includes “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Charlie Brown’s All-Stars,” “It’s the Great Pumpkin,” “Your’s In Love,” “He’s Your Dog” and “It Was A Short Summer.”
- Push
- Reno 911: The Complete Sixth Season
- See Dick Run
- Shaolin Grandma: I’ve never heard of it, but the title caught my eye. This should either be terrible or highly amusing.
- Sherlock Holmes: The 1922 silent John Barrymore version
- Tempest: Not an adaptation of the Shakespeare
- Third Watch: The Complete Second Season
- Those Who Hunt Elves Complete
- TNA Against All Odds 2009
- Trail of the Lonesome Pine
- Twelve Kingdoms Complete Collection: Anime series based off the Twelve Kingdoms light novels, of which we’ve previously reviewed the first.
- The Unborn
- The Universe: Complete Season Two
- WWE Extreme Rules 2009: The WWE changed their “Hardcore Match” Pay-Per-View’s name from “One Night Stand” to “Extreme Rules”.
Now, the Blu-Ray picks:
- The Deep
- Grumpy Old Men
- Knowing
- Iron Maiden: Flight 666: A Rockumentary/Concert Film covering Iron Maiden’s most recent concert tour, which was done on a jet piloted by the band’s lead singer, Bruce Dickinson (who moonlights as an airline pilot when he’s not in a metal band, flying identical Boeing 757s).
- Night Train
- Push
- The Unborn
- Universe: Complete Second Season
Finally, the picks of the week. AceCaseOR recommends “Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. 15.” Fiziko once again recommends saving up for multiple items on July 21 and/or 28 with the BSG, Psych, Monk, Green Lantern, Watchmen, Pushing Daisies, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Dollhouse and Stargate SG-1 releases coming in those two weeks.
