DS9 the Movie: “Slim and None”

According to TV Zone’s interview (Courtesy of The Greak Link) with leading DS9 writer Ira Behr, is that a movie version of the darkest Trek series to date will probably never come to pass. He says he’d be thrilled to do it, if Paramount ever asks.

I do like the fact that he puts the exact word on top of what made DS9 so different. It’s “uncomfortable.” It took the Trek we’ve been breastfed for years and sours the milk. Some fans spit it out and walked away, while others were fascinated by the new flavor.

Fans will just have to wait and see if “What You Leave Behind” will truly be left behind as the final word on Deep Space Nine.

  1. uncomfortable
Yes the series was dark and uncomfortable, but I think the real kicker is it doesn’t get comfortable at the end of an episode. Short attention spans, old trek fans were used to a problem occuring and getting resolved by the end of the show, and it wasn’t resolved, it wasn’t even a big deal. You can’t just sit down and watch one episode and understand what’s going on or why it is entertaining. Especially because you didn’t always have someone blurting out all the answers 30 min into the show, sometimes you just had to wait and think.

I believe if you could take one of these trek fans that doesn’t like DS9, pop them infront of a tv playing DS9 from the begining to the end, maybe a sprinkle of riddlin, they would see that it’s the best star trek of all time :)

In the same vein I think a movie would be a bad idea unless it was 3-4 hour monster, but that would only be after you bought the DVD, since only the super-chopped money-maker would be on the big screen.

  2. What about a TV Mini-series?
They should make a mini-series “movie”, so that it can be 6 hours long and really kick ass. I don’t think UPN has done a miniseries; maybe this could elevate them to the next level as a network, and give us more DS9!

That sets an odd precident for Trek shows of the future. A Voyager reunion anyone? My only problem with that is mini-series rarely capture the feel of the show, while a full high-quality movie production comes close.

Some people really like that idea.

Years ago, when i watched the first TOS pilot, I thought that it would be cool to see a prequel to TOS. Now I’m delighted that Enterprise has been made. (Although I’d prefer if the

technology would be a little more primitive).

What I’d like to see NOW is, as you suggest a couple of miniseries, but why limit it to DS9?

The miniseries format would allow the writers to experiment a bit more. Concepts that would grow repetitive in a seven season series could still be amazingly interresting in one or two movie-length episodes. Forexample: A Federation undercover spy story. A special forces team making covert missions against Romulans terrorists. Or why not follow a Marquis team for a while?

Also that way they could afford to killoff a few of the goog guys every now and then.
