Enterprise: Year One

The first season in review. There’s also an archive list of past reviews in case you missed one.

Enterprise:
Year One

Well kids. Here we are. Summer is upon us and “Enterprise” has wrapped
for its first season.

Was it all good? No. But was it all bad? Certainly not. I know I’ve had my
in much of the bashing that’s gone on at this site, but I still love Star Trek.
Few things could really make me change my mind on that subject. Recently I caught
some of the first episodes for TNG and I was reminded how bad inaugural seasons
could be. At least “Enterprise” has brilliant effects, excellent production
values, and some much better dialogue. That being said:

What to Change in Season 2

Give the secondary characters some depth
Phlox and Mayweather seem to have been relegated to one-scene guys. Mayweather’s
been cruising space all his life. Archer should be using him as a resource.
Same with Phlox. He knows more about alien species than the rest of the crew
(save for T’Pol).
Fewer “Aliens-of-the-Week”
The space Enterprise is exploring isn’t all that vast. They should
be bumping into the same species over and over again. Getting more depth from
one species could prove more valuable than a smattering of every race out
there.
Get Jolene Blalock into rehab
The past few weeks have had her looking drawn, tired, and generally strung
out. Clean it up lady, you’re starting to look like crap.

And just to prove it isn’t all bad

What to Keep from Season 1

Keep that sense of wonder
What makes this show stand out (and indeed the guiding reason for its creation)
is the fact that virtually everything is new. Bakula’s performance is a key
example of this concept, and Blalock’s T’Pol its antithesis. It makes for
a nice balance.
Keep up the sharp effects
I don’t know what the budget for “Enterprise” is, but it must
be higher than the rest of the shows put together. Keen work, sharp digital
effects, and excellent make-up.
The Andorian/Vulcan Cold War
These two are founding members of the Federation, so how this all pans out
is critical to the Star Trek timeline.

And with that the “Enterprise” reviews will say adieu for the summer. See you next fall!

  1. Flawed but Promising
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
Enterprise just wrapped up the best first
season a Star Trek show has ever had. I hope it improves
over the years as TNG and DS9 did.

  2. Really nice for a first season
There were some awful episodes but some very good ones too. The vulcans-andorians story arc is very interesting and I’m sure we’ll see more of that in the future. The sulibans and the cabal are quite nice too. The time travel thing is a bit too cliché.

And off course, there is T’Pol :) Enterprise wouldn’t be the same without her.

  3. All in all, it was watchable television.
This is how I rate shows on TV currently.

If given the option, would I watch Farscape or x

Farscape won this year. Glad they’re on at different times.

But, Enterprise has been very good. I like Bakula despite what people have whined about him. He gives the character the wonderment that i like, and I liked him in quantum leap.

I must admit, a part of me with this time travel thing wants him to jump in / out in a flash of blue light every once in a while just to pay homage to QL.

I will continue to watch the show, and if season one comes out on DVD I will purchase it just like every other ST and Farscape DVD.

Drop that God awful theme song.

And replace it with Bakula giving the “Space:…” speech.

Drop that God awful theme song.

I’d suggest everyone get used to it. Paramount paid out the bucks to use it, and they aren’t going to change it for a few malcontents. You’d need an “Anti-Jar-Jar Binks Crusade” like Star Wars fans had to make that kind of change.

      The song isn’t that bad.

And I’mnot watching it for the song.

      ya know?
