This week we have the Super Bowl in the US, and the start of the Olympic games. So, while this week isn’t exactly lean, it’s not as heavy as last week, in my opinion.
First, the DVD picks:
- Army Wives: The Complete Third Season
- Bad Girls of Film Noir 1: Includes “The Killer That Stalked New York,” “Two of a Kind,” “Bad for Each Other” and “The Glass Wall.”
- Bad Girls of Film Noir 2: Includes “Night Editor,” “One Girl’s Confession,” “Over-Exposed” and “Women’s Prison.”
- Bronson
- Bushido: The Cruel Code of the Samurai
- The Charlie Chaplin Collection: Blaine: Includes “The Kid,” “A Woman of Paris,” “The Gold Rush,” “The Circus,” “City Lights,” “Modern Times,” “The Great Dictator,” “Monsieur Verdoux,” “Limelight” and “A King in New York.” This appears to be identical content to the first two Charlie Chaplin box sets released by Warner Bros., but only at first glance. They had a higher price point and several bonus-laden extra discs. This appears to be region 0 with the main titles only, released through 101 Distribution. I’m betting the video transfers will not be up to the quality we got on the Warner Bros. sets.
- Coach: Seasons 1 and 2
- Couples Retreat
- Dangerous Man
- Dante’s Inferno: Animated, starring the voice of Mark Hamill, based on the upcoming God Of War clone by EA.
- Dare
- David Lean DVD Collection Box: Includes “Oliver Twist,” “Great Expectations,” “Blithe Spirit,” “This Happy Breed,” “Brief Encounter,” “Madeleine,” “The Sound Barrier” and “Hobson’s Choice.”
- Detour
- Endgame
- Gaogaigar Season One Litebox
- Girl’s High Complete Slimpack: Slice-of-life comedy anime.
- Greatest Heroes and Legends: A 15 DVD box set
- The Guild: Season Three: Blaine: Note that this is actually a February 15 release, not February 9. It still appears on this week’s list because it’s out before next Tuesday, though.
- I Hate Valentine’s Day
- JAG – The Final Season
- King Lear: The Orson Welles production
- Law and Order: Criminal Intent: Seasons 1 and 2
- The Life and Times of Tim: The Complete First Season
- Lipstick Jungle: Seasons 1 and 2
- Maneater
- Marilyn Monroe Collection: Blaine: Includes “Monkey Business,” “Don’t Bother to Knock,” “Niagara,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” “How To Marry a Millionaire,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “River of No Return,” “The Seven Year Itch,” “Bus Stop” and “Norma Jean and Marilyn.” The first nine titles were all in the Warner Bros. sets from a few years ago. I don’t know if “Norma Jean and Marilyn” is a documentary or the feature film starring Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino.
- Miami Vice: Seasons 1 and 2: Alex: What might be some of the best two seasons of the show (I haven’t watched Season 3 yet).
- Naruto: Shippuden, Vol. 6
- One Hot Summer
- The Patty Duke Show: Season Two
- The People Speak
- Pride and Prejudice: The 2 disc collector’s edition of the Kiera Knightley version.
- Rod Serling Studio One Dramas
- The Sarah Silverman Program, Vol. 2
- Second Sight Complete Collection
- A Serious Man: Blaine: Nominated for Best Picture on Oscar night, I believe. Alex: Yes it was.
- Serious Moonlight
- Sliders: Seasons Three and Four: Blaine: I’m almost resigned to the fact that I’ll never have the full series on DVD. This is the fourth time they’ve repackaged and rereleased one or more of the first four seasons, and they’ve never released the fifth and final season. From what I hear, season five was utterly terrible, but it still bugs me that I won’t have a complete set.
- Soul Eater, Part One
- Stargate Universe – Season 1.0: Blaine: I’ll probably pick this up when they shrink wrap the entire first season together. So far I’ve only watched the first three seasons of SG1, so I’m confident that’ll be available by the time I get around to watching it.
- The Stepfather
- The Time Traveler’s Wife
- Twelve Angry Men: Blaine: The Studio One version. I don’t know how it compares to the Peter Fonda movie, but given that the Peter Fonda movie was based on a play, it could hold up extremely well. Either way, with that script, it’s a hard story to get wrong, and should be mandatory viewing in one form or another.
- Vegas, The First Season: Volume 1: This is the original Robert Urich and Tony Curtis series, not the new one.
- Vegas: Season One (Vol. 1 and 2)
- XII – The Conspiracy: Alex: This is the recent made-for-TV mini-series based on the French Jason Bourne-esque comic book.
Now, the Blu-Ray picks:
- Bronson
- Couples Retreat
- Dante’s Inferno
- Dare
- Drop Zone
- Hard Rain
- I Hate Valentine’s Day
- The Phantom
- The Running Man
- A Serious Man
- Serious Moonlight
- Stargate Universe – Season 1.0
- The Stepfather
- The Time Traveler’s Wife
- XIII – The Conspiracy
Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “I’m tempted to go with the David Lean set, but as it’s a 101 DISTRIBUTION title from region 0, I’d be concerned about the quality. If it’s in watchable condition, go for it.” Alex says, “Get the Miami Vice set if you haven’t already. The first two seasons are just really good television, especially Season 1.”
