Prolific fantasy author, Brian Jacques, passed away this weekend from a heart attack at age 71.
Jacques is best known for his Redwall series of fantasy novels that featured anthropomorphic woodland creatures in and around the abbey of Redwall. One of the best descriptions of his books have been “Lord of the Rings meets Watership Down.”
If you haven’t read at least the first book, Redwall, I highly recommend them. Especially for the Middle School/Junior High crowd. My family regularly takes his books (in the form of audiobooks) on long road trips.
One of the great things about the books is that they take place forward and backward in the world’s history so you can go for months or even years between books and not really miss anything.
