Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2 February 2020

With Arrow’s departure, his Devestated Comrades mostly managed to pick up the pieces, except for a few who took the week off for funeral leave.  Black Lightning and his kids join the enemies side, while The Flash remembers he’s married and helps his wife while he mourns.  The Legends take off for 1947 to be gangsta.  The other comic spawned show (Riverdale) tells us a very gender specific tale of honor.   In space, The Doctor returns to Earth, but surprisingly it’s in India, not London.  I guess The Doctor expects the Midwives to handle any calls without help.  It sounds easy enough, since they mostly expect to go see a movie.  This leaves Picard to go off into space with his former crew.  (Not that one, the crew after that one.)

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 25 January 2020

The Judoon return to Doctor Who this week, bringing back a fan favorite rhinoceros-headed aliens.  Elsewhere in space, Picard continues to try to solve the mystery of Data’s daughter.  The Midwives are called to make a case for home service for births (instead of hospitals,) as well.  That’s just the start of this week’s shows.  Are you unable to cope with the Deluge?  Can’t keep up with all of these shows?  Good news, one of them is going away!  Arrow airs its finale this week, bringing eight years to a close for the show that started one of the most successful runs of DC properties in video.  Batwoman’s birthday even takes a back seat, Supergirl brings a season one star back, all the other heroes are still to busy to stop by Freeland to help their new friend Black Lightning, and the Legends skip this week to make room for a special set of postmortem interviews with Arrow creators.  Elsewhere, Archie Comics give us another episode of Riverdale, and the next season of Sabrina is still hanging out if you have more time to hang out in the Bureau’s Breakroom.

Happy 25th, Star Trek: Voyager

Today, in 1994, a new Star Trek premiered. It would be (until Picard), the last series based in the TNG-era. It was a mixed bag to say the least, but I at least owe it a little debt, it’s what got me started here at Bureau, and for that, I’ll always be grateful.

Share your favorite (and not-so-favorite) moments from the seven year trek that was Star Trek: Voyager.

Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 5 January 2020

You did see the first episode of Doctor Who, right?  The Doctor has saved us, and brought a Midwife back so we have something to watch.  Star Trek: Discovery also gives us a short trek, but this is another light week for you to catch up before that Dastardly Crisis comes for us next week.

Star Trek Pioneer D.C. Fontana Has Passed Away

Dorothy Catherine “D.C.” Fontana has passed away at the age of 80 after a brief illness. She wrote for a variety of TV shows, including four Star Trek series, Babylon 5, and much more. She wrote the Star Trek novel, Vulcan’s Glory, which tells of Spock’s first mission aboard the Enterprise and explored Captain Pike’s “Number One” character (played by Majel Barret in the unaired pilot, “The Cage”).

In a male-dominated industry, she hid her gender using her initials (a common practice in those days for women writers).

Fontana wrote one of (if not the best) episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series, “Yesteryear” as well as the DS9 episode “Dax” which explored the past hosts of Jadzia’s symbiote. She also wrote “Journey to Babel” for TOS, which introduced Spock’s parents, Sarek and Amanda.

Raise a glass of Romulan Ale, “To absent friends.”

RIP, Aron Eisenberg

Aron Eisenberg, best known for playing Nog on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has passed away at the age of 50 from unknown causes. He brought us a fantastic character and, I would argue, one of the best character arcs of any character in any Star Trek. Eisenberg brought a mischievous charm to the character, taking him from juvenile thief to Starfleet Lieutenant. He was also an ardent fan of Star Trek as a whole and ran a podcast, The 7th Rule along side friend and costar Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko). Continue reading →

Star Trek: Reunited

Specifically, CBS and Viacom are merging back into one entity. Previously, CBS owned the TV rights to Star Trek while Viacom owned the movie rights (they split up in 2006). It’s partly what led to the JJ Abrams 2009 reboot movies, rather than a continuation of the TNG/DS9/VOY story arc. This will also mean that all of Paramount’s movies will be (theoretically) available on CBS All Access in the future.

In sadder Star Trek news, Barbara March, the actress behind the cunning and ruthless Lursa, has passed away at 65 from cancer. May she live on in Sto’Vo’Kor.
