Wakanda For An Oscar?

The 2018 Academy Awards nominees are out and, for the first time ever, a superhero movie has made it into the Best Picture Category. Black Panther probably won’t win, but it’s a nice nod to the genre that has certainly matured in the last decade.

2017 Oscar Round-Up

For genre films it was (yet again) a quiet night:

  • Arrival – Sound Editing
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – Costume Design
  • The Jungle Book – Visual Effects
  • Piper – Animated Short Film
  • Suicide Squad – Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Zootopia – Animated Feature Film

Which genre films did you think got what they deserved? Which were snubbed?

2017 Academy Award Nominess

The nominees for the films that came out in 2016 are up. As usual, genre films are passed over, but at least Arrival seems to have caught the Academy’s attention for some of the major awards. While not genre, per se, Hidden Figures is definitely a geek-friendly movie and highly recommended by the Bureau staff.

Evangelion 1.0 Isn’t Elgible For Oscar But Ponyo Is

Anime News Network is reporting that Neon Genesis Evangelion 1.0: You Are (not) Alone, the first film of Gainax’s Eva reset film trilogy is, unfortunately, not eligible for the Academy award for Best Animated Feature. According to the Acadamy’s rules, a foreign film is eligible for nomination for this year’s awards if it first opened outside the US after January 1st, 2008. However, Eva 1.0 opened on September 1st, 2007, and Funimation licensed the film around December. Ponyo, however, is elgible, meeting the requirements for US and Domestic release dates.
