Halloween Treat: Alien Coming Back to Theaters

FilmJerk.com has the details here, but the high points are that the 1979 film will be restored and will include deleted scenes.

I was four when the original debuted (and most of you probably weren’t even born), so this will be a real treat.

    Man do I feel old…

One of the reasons I loved this film so much was it took me by surprise. I had heard nothing about it, didn’t even know it was coming out. A friend and I were walking past the movie theatre and saw it, ‘Alien? That sounds cool. Lets see it right now!’. And WOW did it scare us!

I’ll be there on Halloween to “relive” the experience.

Yeah REALLY! I remember working at my first REAL job, standing on the platform of the New York City Subway system waiting for the #3 IRT train downtown. Just a poster of a weird, glowing green egg and the “Alien” logo.

“Not even born yet??” Think I’ll go sit down on my soft pillow and swig my bottle of Geritol now…

Don’t feel too bad, I was in High School when it came out.
I guess a lot of us are older than we’d think.

  2. Mom?……Dad?……

I was four when the original debuted

I was about the same age. This example is proof that young children really see more than we think they do…

All I remember is sitting with my parents watching it on HBO. I was so terrified. When I was put in bed, all I remember was laying there, petrified that an alien was going to come out of my chest (or bite my face off). I creeped into my parents bedroom, trying not to wake everyone up (like my baby brother), when I stepped on the dog on the floor in their room. Of course my parents jumped up scared to death. At the time, and for many years to follow, it was the scariest movie I had ever seen. No movie had ever had that kind of effect on me. The only one since that has scared me that much was (now don’t laugh) 13 Ghosts. Sure it was super cheesy, but it was like a movie equivilant of Silent Hill, which is the most disturbing game I’ve ever played.

I can’t wait to see this in the theaters. Sleepless nights await an all new generation!

Never heard of 13 ghosts… might have to rent it, if I can find it. Is it a horror film?

Alien is simply one of the best thrillers out there. I love how it mixed horror with sci-fi… This is a must-see!

It was a B&W horror flick, remade a few years ago with CGI. The OP didn’t specify which version he saw.

(BTW, I was in college when Alien came out… and HS when Star Wars came out. A lot of people think movies have the greatest impact on young kids, but imagine being an idealistic teenager and seeing the Star Wars mythology back when it was fresh and original!)

  3. Alien life cycle
    WARNING, possible SPOILER below.
    You have been warned.

W000! Deleted scenes! Does this mean we’ll get to see the scene where
Ripley finds her missing shipmates, in various stages of transformation
into Alien eggs? That would contradict the lame alien queen thingy from
Aliens…although I hear they somehow retconned that so it fits in the
books, but I haven’t read them myself.

Most of the restored stuff should be from the special edition DVD (I’ve got it.) Dallas begging to be killed, stuff like that. It will be interesting seeing the cut scenes placed where the director felt they should go, instead of just tacked on to the DVD as special features.

Actually, if I recall correctly, Ridley Scott has stated that he does not want the extra scenes re added. Which is why in both the Laserdisc and the DVD (which was just a straight copy of the LD master) they are included as extras, but no reinserted into the films. I belive Scott’s feeling was that they destroyed the pacing of the film.

        • In which case the director felt they should go on the floor. :)

I’d still like to see this, but I wonder if Scott will choose to talk to the press about his wishes?

  4. The sound in the TV commercial …
The green fire. The egg. “In space, no one can hear you scream.” I remember not being able to walk under the attic door for weeks — I had to run. I was 13. I snuck in to see it in a drive in theater (I hid in the trunk, my 16 year old friends drove, pretending to be 17.)

It scared the holy hell out of me. I had nightmares. It was fantastic. This is fantastic news! :)

    • Oh, and I don’t have to breathe exhaust fumes for five minutes. :)
A lot can be said for not breathing exhaust fumes, not having a tire jack pressing into your arm, and not having your friends taunt you about maybe letting you out. :)
