Virgin Galactic launches with its founder Sunday, July 11, 2021

Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson will launch Sunday, July 11 at 9am 10:30 EST aboard the VSS Unity, the first Virgin Galactic flight to carry a full crew. The event, intended in part to show the viability of space tourism, will go full media circus, with Stephen Colbert hosting and Khalid debuting a new song at the landing site.

Jeff Bezos will launch into space later this summer. Wally Funk, one of the “Mercury Thirteen” prospective female astronauts will join that flight, setting a record for the oldest person to travel in space. SpaceX, meanwhile, continues to demonstrate more practical applications of private spaceflight.

  1. I watched the live feed for a bit, but turned it off before too long because I couldn’t handle watching Branson ——– his own —– for that long.

    • I expected the self-promotion. This was as much a commercial for Virgin Galactic as anything else. It was an interesting step towards “accessible” space travel (at present, SPACE barely-off-world has been opened up for the AVERAGE PERSON extremely wealthy), so I tolerated it. We watched over brunch and discussed other matters much of the time.
