He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Amazon
Comments Blaine: The other He-Man series produced by Netflix. Kevin Smith’s series feels like the original cartoon stayed on the air for 30 years and they decided it was time to shake things up. This is a reimagining for a younger audience, in which a CG He-Man shares his powers with friends and skips leg day. I found the first season really enjoyable, and have been meaning to go back to it to watch the rest.

Last Blood (Hard Boiled II)
Amazon
Comments Alex: Not really a sequel to Hard Boiled, but a film marketed as one outside of Hong Kong. Action film about a Hong Kong Triad and an Interpol inspector who have to work together to save the three people in Singapore who have a particular rare blood type needed to save a Tibetan Lama (in addition to the Triad’s girlfriend) – who were both injured in a terrorist attack by the members of the Japanese Red Army.

Oppenheimer: The Real Story
Amazon
Comments Blaine: This sounds like a rushed documentary largely assembled from stock footage in an attempt to get the “real” story out before Nolan’s summer blockbuster. Nolan’s film is anticipated on home video in November.
Pumpkinhead
Amazon
Comments Supernatural slasher film directed by Stan Winston.
Rosemary’s Baby
Amazon
Comments Blaine: When I saw this on TV about 30 years ago, I was blown away by how good it was. I promptly ran director Roman Polanski’s name through Webcrawler to find out what else he had directed and learned things that have made my stomach turn at the sight of his name ever since. If you feel that there are lines which may be crossed by artists which can make you turn away from their art, trust that Roman Polanski has crossed one of those lines. Alex: Agreed, Polanski is currently on my “Wait until he’s dead and then check to see what his estate does with the money” list.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “My 4K Pick of the week is Snow White for parents (though Sleeping Beauty is my favorite of the Disney films of this era), and Videodrome for horror fans. For non-4K releases, honestly not much else grabs me, though Disney fans who are considering picking up a 4K player in the future should probably pick up this release of Snow White. For anime fans I’m going with the Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions collection.” Blaine says, “of those I’ve seen in its entirety, I definitely recommend the Wallace and Gromit collection. I really want to get back to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.”

  1. I addressed the Polanski issue and my own hair-splitting response in a previous Halloween countdown. The movie remains good, regardless, and the novel on which it is based is entirely clear of Polanski’s taint.

Videodrome is interesting, if not Cronenberg’s best, the series of Westworld is excellent, and I will always have a fond spot for Wallace and Gromit.

So, Westworld would be my top pick.
