“Serenity” Finally Breaks Even

Thanks to strong DVD sales and the TV broadcast rights, “Serenity” has moved from being in the red to actually making money! More details from Slice of SciFi. This makes it more likely for the ‘Verse to go on (in one form or another).

  1. I don’t get it!
My Firefly DVD’s arrived last thursday. Since then I’ve hooked 2 people, have 1 person waiting to borrow Disc 1 and one guy’s girlfriend is aleady talking like Kaylee when she hasn’t even seen the show yet!

How is that this franchise isn’t making gobs of money?

I think the "one guy’s girlfriend" you speak of is the exception to the rule – for the most part, people have to actually see either Firefly or Serenity before they start frothing at the mouth about how great it is (I don’t know why, but for some reason just telling them doesn’t seem to work).

Either way, I’m glad it broke even… Now bring on the rest of the Big Damn Trilogy!

I completely agree with this. My wife and I tried for ages to get her sister & hubby into Firefly, as they both love scifi and are fans of Buffy & Angel, but they never would watch it, always shrugging it off. Finally we got them to borrow the DVD set and the husband has since proclaimed that for thirty years his favorite TV show ever was ST:TOS but it has been replaced by Firefly. The sister has seen some of it but hasn’t been as hooked, yet anyway, she hasn’t seen Out of Gas yet.

It goes back to an idea I had two years ago, they need to release one of the episodes as a free download SVCD / DVD for people to pass among their friends, that’ll get them hooked.

        • This is beginning to sound like a religious revival meeting

Yea, this site first brought me into Firefly, and we have since witnessed to our neighbours, SF fans who did borrow unto them our DVDs and were turned to the Show (praise be), and then a friend of mine who had hardened her heart and would not watch the show because her ex-girlfriend had been singing its praises around the time they broke up saw Serenity, and lo, she too borrowed the DVDs, and more souls have been won. Amen.

But, yeah, it’s a hard sell until one actually sees it.

I’ve converted five or six people to Firefly. They all ask the same question. Give it time. :)

  2. it’ll do
I knew it would at least break even… 40 mil ain’t much for a complete movie. It might be a slow starter but eventually it’ll make more (like the tv show did). I doubt it’llbe enough to bring it back though.

I don’t know about that… Hollywood is a wierd place. You’ve got the visionaries, and the home-run hitters. You’ve also got bean-counters and other financial types.

Those guys tend to be risk averse. The Firefly franchise may not be a home run, but it’s a proven commodity, a long-term financial winner.

      That may be enough…
