Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “My 4K release for this week, among the numerous solid releases from Arrow, is The Last Starfighter. Otherwise not much else grabs me.” Blaine says, “for me, the top two choices are Galaxy Quest and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.”

  1. Watership Down is pure Gen X nightmare fuel, but it’s an excellent film. I read the book 5 or so years ago and the movie is a pretty faithful adaptation.

Ahsoka was good, but it could have been so much better. Bringing the characters from Rebels (including Thrawn) was a good idea…just executed in a mediocre way. The show felt like it was written by committee (a complaint that could be leveled at most of Disney’s Star Wars content).

  2. This week bring some interesting cultish offerings, worth seeing if not necessarily owning:

After Hours (1985), a bizarre dark comedy from Scorsese. I doubt a synopsis could do it justice. Supposedly, he ran the rushes by De Palma, Gilliam, and Spielberg trying to figure out an ending.

The Warriors (1979) isn’t remotely as good, but it’s an interesting film that gets referenced in the oddest places: “Warriors…. come out to play….”

Shaft (1971): is Shaft. Should you see it if you haven’t? Damn right.

I had not heard of Scala!!! (2023), but a dive into it led to Hard Wood, a collection of Ed Wood’s little-seen pornographic films (his career after he stopped doing low-rent horror) and the lingering question of why the most-viewed Amazon pick after that is John Ford’s epic western The Searchers (1956) starring John Wayne.
