Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “This week I’m going with the Shaw Brothers collection – these all have been very solid thus far, with Wolf Children as both my UHD and anime pick.” Blaine says, “the Bill and Ted movies are the favourites of those I have seen. It’s entirely possible that they will be eclipsed by Ran when I see it, given how much I’ve enjoyed all of the other Akira Kurosawa films I’ve seen.”

  1. Chinese Ghost Story might be the first wuxia movie I watched and there are still a lot of things I really like about it. Diminishing returns for the sequels though.

Sunset Boulevard is a classic for a reason. If it’s on anyone’s “I’ll watch it some day” list, now’s a good time.

  2. I’ll second Jethro’s take on Sunset Boulevard. I was not prepared for a movie that old to go that hard.

Clue: The Movie is probably Tim Curry at his best (yes, I’ll stand by it). The movie is a laugh riot. Highly recommended. It’s finally getting a proper stage adaptation. https://clueliveonstage.com/

  3. Sunset Boulevard to be sure, but this list also includes Ran, a brilliant and influential Japanese take on King Lear, and the still-hilarious This is Spinal Tap.

Zodiac isn’t in the same league, but I found it nightmare-inducing.

I still haven’t seen Better Off Dead, despite a college housemate frequently referencing the “I want my two dollars!” line.
