The Boys – Season Five Discussion

It’s all over save for the crying. The fifth and final season of The Boys dropped on Amazon.

What do we think now that it’s done and satire seems to be well and truly dead?

The Boys season 5 spoilers: Are many deaths ahead?

  1. I hear a lot of people saying season 5 was terrible, but honestly it continued the trend of the entire series. More shock-value viscera exploding on peoples’ faces, less… you know, plot. I could just hear Seth Rogen’s annoying laugh woven into every episode. There were also too many crossovers and what looked like spin-off setups for stuff that didn’t earn my attention.

I’m not going to pretend I didn’t have a few genuine laughs, and I don’t think this is the fumble/middle finger that The Internet seems to think it is, but… I do think the entire show could’ve been a lot better, let alone the finale.

The thing that perplexes me is that the graphic novel had a really good (or at least rational) ending. I’m not sure why they threw that away several seasons ago.

    • I finished it out because I was curious. It started so strong and clearly they were trying to just milk it. Budget was gone and that was clear. There were a few moments, but the very end was unsatisfying.

I do appreciate that some of the stuff they filmed for Season 5 came true between filming and airing (e.g. HL thinking he’s God just after Trump posted pictures of himself as Jesus).

Maybe I’ll pick up the comics from the library.

  2. I think part of the problem is that if you go insanely over the top to mock reality, that only works if reality doesn’t catch up and overtake you.

That said, I did still enjoy watching it, and if they keep going with those spin-offs, I am still going to watch them.
