I like Casablanca, so I’m down for the homage. And the in-universe reason for it being Black and White was cute.
That said, the fact that Una looked so much like the leader of the resistance that she could fool facial recognition is going to bug the bejesus out of me. Too many easy coincidences start to break the suspension of disbelief.
The fact that they were a human colony in Klingon space alone, or a new race that looks so much like humans bothers me. Facial recognition with no retinal scans in this future? Yeah, that’s potentially episode-breakingly bothersome.
This is another case where they seem to do an homage but miss the point. Yes, I love Casablanca, but saying, “let’s do Casablanca, but without the love story” really misses the point of doing Casablanca. They also take the time to set up a mystery (what happened to Neville) but the characters never actually solve it. The solution gets handed to them when the killer comes face to face with Una, armed, and spells out his motivation and guilt before pulling the trigger instead of just shooting her from behind and walking away.
There are things to like and things to dislike, and the more I think about it, the more of the latter I come up with.
