Weekly Comics Discussion – March 18, 2009

As usual, the complete list is available here.

Dark Horse Comics

  • CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #9
  • INDIANA JONES & TOMB OF THE GODS #4 (OF 4)
  • STAR WARS LEGACY #34 STORMS PART 1 OF 2
  • UMBRELLA ACADEMY DALLAS #5 (OF 6)
  • USAGI YOJIMBO #119

DC Comics

  • BATMAN BATTLE FOR THE COWL COMMISSIONER GORDON #1
  • FLASH ARCHIVES HC VOL 05
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #31
  • SHOWCASE PRESENTS AMBUSH BUG TP VOL 01
  • SUPERMAN #686
  • TRINITY #43
  • WONDER WOMAN #30

Dynamite Entertainment

  • BATTLESTAR GALACTICA CYLON WAR #3 (OF 4)

Image Comics

  • SPAWN #190

Marvel Comics

  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #589
  • AVENGERS INITIATIVE FEATURING REPTIL #1
  • CAPTAIN AMERICA #48
  • DAREDEVIL #117
  • DARK REIGN ELEKTRA #1 (OF 5) – Dark Reign
  • FANTASTIC FOUR #565
  • GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #12
  • IMMORTAL IRON FIST #24 – Rumour has it that this title will be cancelled before the summer’s out. I’ve been collecting it in hardcover, and enjoy what I’ve seen so far. (Hardcover #4 hits this week, too, which I believe will be the first not cowritten by Ed Brubaker or Matt Fraction.)
  • INCREDIBLE HERCULES #127 – Dark Reign
  • MIGHTY AVENGERS #23 – Dark Reign, wrapping up the first 3 issue story arc.
  • MS MARVEL #37 – Dark Reign. If I’m to believe the spoilers I accidentally read (revealed by writer Brian Reed a few months ago; a reliable source, if not one I’d expect spoilers from) this looks to be a MAJOR turning point for Carol Danvers.
  • NEW AVENGERS #51 – Dark Reign. The new sorceror supreme could be revealed here. I’m pulling for the Hood.
  • NOVA #23 – A rock solid series that will soon cross over into the War of Kings.
  • RUNAWAYS 3 #8 – Issue 7 reportedly sold only 19,684 copies. Marvel tends to cancel titles that stay below 24k for extended periods of time. There’s a movie in development, so it looks like they’re giving a last minute creative team replacement a shot instead. The new team is on issue 11, though they haven’t been announced yet. Terry Moore’s last issue is #9, due next month.
  • SQUADRON SUPREME 2 #9 – June’s issue 12 is confirmed as the final issue. It’s written well enough, but the characters that made the JMS run so great didn’t reappear until the last page of issue 6. I suspect it had lost too many readers to recover by that time.
  • THUNDERBOLTS #130 – Dark Reign.
  • WAR MACHINE #4 – Dark Reign
  • WAR OF KINGS DARKHAWK #2 (OF 2) – This is review priority #2 this week, after “Kingbreaker” and before “Mighty Avengers” and the “Amazing Spider-Man” 40 issue monster review that’ll get us caught up from issue 559 until now.
  • X-FORCE CABLE MESSIAH WAR PROLOGUE
  • X-MEN KINGBREAKER #4 (OF 4)

  1. GoG before Nova
This week’s Nova spoils this week’s Guardians of the Galaxy. If you collect both titles, read Guardians first.

  2. Runaways
That news isn’t terribly surprising. It’s been floundering around since the run Whedon had both in the art and story departments. Hopefully bringing in a new team will help.

I hope so too, but I don’t have high hopes for the team that was announced earlier this morning. It’ll be written by Kathryn Immonen, who wrote the recent "Patsy Walker: Hellcat" miniseries that started out with about 30k sales and dropped to under 10k for the last issue. (For a five issue miniseries, that’s a huge loss.) The name of the artist escapes me at the moment, but the cited past work is NYX, a title I didn’t pick up because I didn’t like the promotional art. I’ll give the new team a try, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a one or two arc combination that gets replaced again.
