There are a couple of titles of note, but not many.
First, the DVD picks:
- 12 Rounds: Also available on Blu-Ray
- Ah! My Budda Vol. 3
- Apollo 11: A Night To Remember
- Appleseed: This is the 2004 adaptation of the Masamune Shirow manga, which is basically animated in CGI.
- The Beatles International
- Betrayed
- British Cinema: Renown Pictures Crime and Noir Collection: Includes “Blackout,” “Bond of Fear,” “Home to Danger,” “Meet Mr. Callaghan,” “No Trace” and “Recoil.” I took a film studies class from a professor who loves film noir, and I’ve never heard of any of these. How much renown can they really have? Especially when they tell you about said renown in the product title?
- Dead Whisper
- Do The Right Thing (20th Anniversary Edition): Also available on Blu-Ray.
- Divergence Eve Complete: Very fanservice heavy space opera series.
- East of Eden, Vol. 2
- Eastbound and Down: Complete First Season
- Entourage: Complete Fifth Season
- Eureka: Season 3.0
- Heroic Age: The Complete Series Part 2: Space Opera Series
- Hi-5: Season Two
- The IT Crowd: Season Two
- The Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience: Single disc edition. Also available on Blu-Ray and double disc DVD editions. I admit to a certain degree of unfamiliarity with the Jonas Brothers. I just know that when the trailer runs in a theatre lobby, girls in their young teens exclaim “Oh my God! There’s a Jonas Brothers movie!” in the tone of voice you’d use to declare “Oh my God! I won the lottery!” On the other hand, their parents declare “Oh my God! There’s a Jonas Brothers movie!” in the same tone of voice you’d use to declare “Oh my God! When I was walking home from the job I was just fired from because my car was stolen, I was hit by a bus and may lose my left leg.”
- The Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience: Two Disc Extended edition. Also available in single disc and Blu-Ray editions.
- Kong
- Lookin’ To Get Out (Director’s Cut)
- Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the GB Summit
- One Piece Season Two Part One
- Parker Lewis Can’t Lose: Complete First Season: I loved this during its original run. My only hesitation now is that I haven’t seen it since, and don’t know how well the series will age over the intervening years.
- Princess Protection Program
- Samurai Champloo Complete
- Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Season 2
- Stargate Atlantis: The Complete Fifth Season: I do believe this is also the final season. There’s a complete season box due on October 6.
- Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li: Also available on Blu-Ray. Definitely not the best performing movie of the year.
- Swiss Family Robinson
- Ted Nugent: Motor City Mayhem: Also available on Blu-Ray.
- They Call Me Bruce: A kung fu comedy about a cook, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Bruce Lee, has to learn to defend himself after he’s duped into delivering drugs and ends up being a target for various gangs.
- Trailer Park Boys – The Complete Series: I will never understand the popularity this reached in Canada.
- Two Lovers: Also available on Blu-Ray.
- The Writers of Fantasy: A three part documentary about Kenneth Grahame (The Wind in the Willows), C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials)
Now, the Blu-Ray picks:
- 12 Rounds
- Black Christmas
- Do The Right Thing (20th Anniversary Edition)
- Flawless
- The Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience
- Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk: An opera adaptation of Shakespere’s classic play by the Russian composer Shostakovitch. I caught the tail end of this and it looked pretty good.
- Seven
- Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li
- Ted Nugent: Motor City Mayhem
- Two Brothers
Finally, the picks of the week. AceCaseOR says, “Samurai Champloo, hands down.” Fiziko says, “I’ll probably pick up Stargate Atlantis: Season Five to complete my collection. Other than that, wait three weeks. There’s usually not a lot of great stuff released between the last week of June and the third week of July because people are in movie theaters instead of watching at home. The average quality of the releases spikes as of July 21.”
If you haven’t checked out I would recommend it. Series 1 and 2 are available on Netflix for instant play.
I’ll try that again:

How’s that Preview button coming along?
Because that’d be an excellent feature, wouldn’t it?
Waiting for it with bated breath… And the ability to submit suggested articles.
Random thought: In the commentary on these WDDP posts (which is great, btw), could put “A:” and “F:” next to the comments, or some similar indication of who’s making the comments? Some of the comments can get a little jarring until I realize they’re probably not by whom I’m assuming they’re by. ;) (I don’t know that there was anything like that here but it’s happened in the past!)
Not a big deal, just an idea.
